So I had a question for all you recent applicants and/or people who've gone through the documentation/transcript process with EPIK/GEPIK or any public school positions. My recruiter has requested a single 'sealed' official transcript from my graduating university, which I obtained recently. Unfortunately, due to the prying actions of my father, he had mistakenly opened the transcript envelope...

1. Do transcripts need to be sealed in order to be accepted? It doesn't seem to make much sense b/c on the outside of the envelope it reads, "The enclosed document contains its own authentication and validation. No seals, signature, or other markings are necessary on this envelope."

2. Who exactly receives my transcript? From what I understand, I only need 1 official transcript - is this for visa/immigration purposes?

Yes, it needs to be sealed, it is for visa/immigration purposes. You will have to get another one, sealed by university admin (or whoever handles that kind of thing at your university).

That transcript is now NO GOOD. YOu'll need to get another one. One that's sealed with the uni's stamp on it.

And don't get just one. Get 4 or 5 copies, and keep 'em hidden away. When I got my apostilled CRC, did I get one copy? Nope. I got 4 copies, just in case. Nothing is a sure thing in Korea.

Newbies always make this mistake. They get only one copy of their documents while back home. When I get copies of my documents, I stock up. Last time I went to my uni, I got 4 copies of my transcripts (it wasn't enough, as I needed 3 just at one job alone, a job that didn't work out) and 4 copies of my degree (I needed two of those for the job--one for the employer and one at the consulate).

Let me run down what you'll usually need at just one job in Korea:

1. 2 copies of your diploma, 1 for your new employer, 1 for the consulate
2. 3 copies of your (sealed, stamped) transcripts, 2 for your employer (1 for the employer and 1 for immy) and 1 for your recruiter
3. 1 copy of your apostilled CRC
4. 1 copy of your certification (a notarized copy not necessary in Korea)
5. 3 passport photos (I get 4 at Kinko's and send them the sheet)
6. 1 copy of your passport picture page
7. Any letters of recommendation you may need
8. The 'Vulnerable search' check Canadians have to get (thanks to Christopher Paul Neil, TESOL's favorite Canadian)
9. 1 xeroxed copy of your home-country's driver's license (at least I needed to give this last time)
10. The latest copy of your IRS form 6166 if you're from the USA. This is your 'proof of residency' you'll need later. Don't submit it yet. Keep it, as you'll need it later.
11. The signed contract, which they will provide you. Make two copies and submit one. Keep the other stashed away.


So when you get copies of the docs, realize that is the time to STOCK UP.

Get a couple spares and tell your dad he owes you five bucks. So what did he think of your grades?

Keep copies of everything--scanned into your computer for quick attachments and hard copies for your personal files.

From a parent's perspective, it's helpful to explain the process to them or show them online where they can read up on what's going on with this ESL job. That's how I found Dave's.
