As my wife and I listen to a woman shouting into a megaphone, directing old people in traditional dance, sounding similar to a North Korean TV announcement, we began discussing the Park Chung Hee era. She said that before PJH, such megaphone-style speech wasn't common, although it likely will fade away in 20 years. It's still common, and much more so in North Korea, where even local TV news is shouted in such a way.
Apparently, president PCH is the one responsible for a great many changes in South Korea. For example, Koreans weren't so "bally bally" (hurry, hurry) before this time. Also, according to my wife, the belief that Koreans are somewhat of a master race among Asians began at this time, because PCH was preaching it.
I saw a thread like this on another site, and it was very interesting.

Normalization with Japan was achieved in 1965, bringing with it $800 million in economic aid.
Settlement money, very detailed as to how it had been arrived at (with an apology) which went into state coffers for investment. |

I've heard the same thing, that the full-on nationalist sentiment you encounter here was propagated in schools during the military dictatorship of Park Chun Hee and later Chun Doo Hwan. It's not surprising really.
Let's hope that without the same level of propaganda these days such views will wither away. |

I doubt it. Such sentiments tend to be very durable... Especially as many Koreans believe the balli balli ethic and the nationalism (Korea is strong country, better than South East Asians - they bown and poor - we clean and good culture!!!) is what bought them from being as poor as Bangladesh (fact) in 1953 to a modern industrialised nation (at least in Seoul and perhaps a couple of other cities....)
Ay my last public elementary school every so often the kids would spend THE WHOLE DAY banging drums and doing the daehanminguk chant.... All bloody day long... God I loathed those days... |
