I was having a look at the job board and saw some after school teaching jobs. They look alright, low hours with decent pay. However, there wasn't much said about conditions, vacation, airfare etc.

Anyone doing one of these gigs? What's it like?

a lot of my friends work them. generally they seem to pay 2.2-2.5 depeding on experience etc. most of my friends dont get housimng though. though some also do. the hours are pretty short, though all that time will be in class with only short breaks.

i work in a regluar public school for less cash. but its much easier and for e i get about 8 weeks vacation a year (my principle is cool). but at a min i get 4 weeks and if i resign 2 more weeks. in an afterschool you will get 10 days (2weeks) which you will not always be able to take in block. so 1 day here, 2 days there. my friends usually have to find a replacement for any decent lenght of tim (over 3 days).

to me they are still like a hogwan with less bs. the parents are (mostly) paying for it and thus they are in control. i had a friend who when times were lean and kids were quitting so they cut the number of classes and also his pay accordingly. if you dont mind the lack of vacation, then they are great. but i want that holiday and an easy stress free life. recruiters will tell you its a public school gig. its not. its just that its taught in a public school. which could be really good if you get the good classrooms with big tv, touch screen board etc. in my school though, they use a crappy little classroom with just a white board.

its about personal choice. some swear by them and love them. not for me though. but many of my friends who dont like mornings like them.

Yeah I have an elementary school gig now and I get all the vacations but I just get sick of the BS desk warming I have to do. 2 classes on a Thursday, finished teaching by 10.20am but still have to be here until 4.30pm.

I guess it's pros and cons in every job. Maybe I need to look more seriously into universities.

If you don't like mornings and don't want to work until 10pm, an after school program is good for elementary school students. They have to go home for dinner.

If you really want to teach students and get somewhere in the class, I recommend hagwons for middle school and up. The reason for this is that elementary school students don't want to study after school. They want to play and often have piano, hagwon, or taekwondo classes. So, in your 40 or 50 minute class, some students will come 25 minutes into class while other students are leaving.

At a hagwon it's better because the students are leaving school to go to the hagwon. It's a different environment. Students need to see that change to keep interested in learning. Parents are also paying more, so the students are motivated to at least perform better than "extend" classes at a public school.

However, I am doing it because I can't be bothered with hagwon owners and parents complaining. I get to work at a public school and the attitude has been same as if I were actually working morning to afternoon.

I hope the day comes where we can teach adults off to the side legally.
