| I've been thinking about picking up a PS2 and getting it modified / chipped to play various games and region-free DVD's. I've read a lot of the posts here and have found some good information, but what I'd like to know is, how much should I expect to pay for the system, chip(s), and a few games? Also, where is/are the best place(s) to go in Yongsan for good service and game selection? |

Chip - about 45,000
Games - 15,000 each
As far as I know the chips in Yongsan don't give you region-free DVD capability. You can pick up a Gameshark or Action Replay which will enable you do that, as well as use various cheat codes on games.
I get my stuff in Yongsan from a guy in tbe "games hallway." Most any of them will have the same selection of games and roughly the same prices. |

I've only had my playstation since August. I'd like to get it chipped but I think I'm going to wait until the first year has gone by...my reasoning is that if anything goes wrong then it's still under warranty. If it get it chipped, this would void my warranty.
Besides, I have access to most of the games I want to play and simply don't have the time to play all of the games I want to play. Maybe come the fall I'll get it chipped. I'd be interested to know if the pricing changes from now until then.

| Ah, one more thing - what about the voltage/power issues? Will I be able to take it back home and use it there? Will I need to buy a power transformer, or does the power cable have a built-in converter? |

You should always check first to make sure that whatever you buy is a dual-voltage appliance.

PS2s are not multi-voltage. My Korean unit is rated strictly for 220v, and a friend of mine brought over his North American 110v PS2 thinking the same as you and fused part of his power supply in a light show.

However, if you do blow out your power supply, you can get a multi-voltage one as a replacement - provided you're willing to do the installation yourself.
Lik-sang.com sells them. But if you order one, make sure you order the right one for your model of PS2. |

In Ulsan there is a shop that mods for 30,000. I haven't had mine modded yet, but will. Right now, no serious need, but will get it modded soon. I've heard a rumor that the Korean PS2s will play Japanese, R2 coded games without the mod. Anybody know?

Korea shares the same territorial code as Japan, so it will play Japanese games just fine. Plus my Korean PS2 plays Japanese PS2 games without issue. |

Korean DVD: Region 3. Japanese DVD: Region 2 - however, the box boasts "NTSC-J" as well. I wonder how it would handle a R2 Dvd (not a game). Are the games coded differently than films so this is a R3 DVD PLAYER but an NTSC-J Game system?
