Do the CRBs need to be verified/notarized by the Korean embassy in your country of permanent residence? If not do any Brits have any experience of getting a CRB check (now called a 'Subject Access Request') whilst in Korea?
I haven't spoken to the department as yet (will do so Monday) but I was wondering about what address to put down seeing as it will need to be verified in document form and whether they will even issue the check if you are outside of the UK. Or could you not just put down your permanent UK address, would they notice either way?
I am asking these questions because I want to switch from being a full time student in Seoul to a public school position without having to return to the UK for any documentation (for obvious reasons). If they need to be notarised by the Korean consulate in one's own country of residence then ill have to I guess. |

It's easy.
Go to disclosuresscotland website and pay 23 quid for your online basic disclosure. It will be sent to your ma and pa's house within 11 days max.
Have them FEDEX it to Korea that will be 46 quid and takes 48 hours.
The British Consulte is at exit 3 of City Hall subway Staion in Seoul.
They will notarize / appostille your CRC between the hrs of 9am - 12.30pm mon to fri for 62,000 Won.
Bingo. Done it last week and got E2 visa. This was for a ps job also.
However - if you are not on the electoral role (my Dad took me off it on the census - doh) you'll have to do a paper application and provide a bank statement and copy of passport page which will take longer as you have to have the application form sent to Korea (for some silly reason you can't print them online.) I was lucky though. Seeing as I'd already made my online application and paid me 23 nicker, they emailed me and asked me to fax or email a scanned copy of my passport photo page and a UK bank or c/card statement to prove UK residency. I did this and they sent the crc out automatically a few days later. Which was nice. |

Thanks for that. But shouldn't be carrying out the standard and or enhanced disclosure as we are working with children?
And how does it work with the Scottish check anyways, as i assume you are, I am from England. Or can they not notice the difference.
Also, did you have to put down your Korean address at any time? Sounds like you just used your British address. Did they have any issues with you being in Korea whilst applying?
Also sounds like I should check if I am on the registrar electoral roll or whatever its called these days lol |

No. For our job the online basic disclosure is all that's needed. I've been doing it ever since we've had to supply CRC's.

Yes, I'm English. The agency is for all UK citizens, it's just based in Scotland.

You only use your UK address. No, they had no issues as I am registered as a resident UK citizen, hence the bank statement as proof.

If you haven't been taken off (just ask your folks) then no problems. If you have, just do the online CRC and if and when they email you asking for proof of residency (bank statement and passport scan) just email it to them.
It's a very simple proccess, so please relax.... |

Hi
Sorry I can't PM you.
I am in the process of getting one from Scotland. It's a different agency from the one English people have to use. Im assuming from your use of blighty, that you are indeed an Englishman, wee laddie.
I am in Korea right now, waiting for my CRC. I spoke to the UK embassy in Seoul last week and they said that they will notarize my CRC for 62 000 won. Notarisation can be done here. Immigration says that the CRC is valid 6 months from the date on it. Check if the English variant of the CRB can do it for you whilst you are here
If you come on a student visa and then want to change to another visa, you will not be able to transfer it here in Korea. I tried that despite having every document imaginable. You will have to go to China or Japan for a few days and do a visa run. Osaka and Fukuoka appear to be most popular. You shouldnt have to go back to the UK.
Assuming you want to be a teacher, an employer should be happy they only have to pay the visa run airfare as opposed to the much more expensive ticket from Heathrow.
Also, be preapred and don't expect immigration or the SMONO (Seoul Metropolitan Board of No) to apply controversial concepts such as common sense or logic when they look at your application.
Hope that helps |

Thanks JC, in regards to your last line what did they make an issue out of exactly??
Also can you confirm one thing for me. Before going to Fukoka or Osaka you have to get all your documents verified with immigration. Is it true they give you a pass number or something required at the Korean embassy and also do you have to go with your employer to immigration?

I'm likely to be doing my second visa run in a month. My understanding of the process is this.
You or your sponsor give immigration your university transcripts, notarised copy of the degree (or actual degree), CRC, medical check from home country or in Korea is ok, school business number, copy of the contract, copy of your passport front page.
They give you a visa issuance number. In my case, I then have to go to Japan so that the Korean immi authorities can issue visa, shuffle papers, justify their existence.
Im not sure it's necessary to go with your employer, in most cases, the teacher is still in their home country when immigration is presented with these documents.
With respect to my last line, too many to mention here, but my situation is different to yours. When I inquired about my predicament i.e, lost passport, me having dual citizenship and holder of two passports it confused the hell out of everyone.
If you search around these forums, you can read about many instances of immi and some boards, especially SMONO being thick. Such as, your problem is too hard = please speak to someone other than me. Get information from one person only to be contradicted by someone else or contradicted by the same person should you ask them the same thing a while later.
For instance, yesterday, I told immi that I would show the consulate in Osaka both CRC's. They said I don't need the Australian one, only the UK one. This is despite the fact that I already have it, have lived half my life, including all my adult life in Australia. So, I could be a dodgy coke smoking weapons dealer with multiple assault convictions back in Australia but because my UK record is clean I can go play simon says with 6 year olds.
Tiiiiiiiimmmmmmyyyyyy! |
