|
|
I am an English teacher, but my real title is "social studies teacher" at an elementary school. I teach American history and 'culture', and also civics. These subjects are incredibly boring to Korean students who can't get by the 'teacher game' meme. I'm trying to find decent videos on youtube and google video, but a lot of them are amateur hour.
Does anyone know of video/educational sites that have (somewhat) professional videos about American history/civics/geography/culture etc? Thanks a bunch. |

Schoolhouse Rock, Baby!!!
A 70s educational folk-singing team. I use their American Rock videos in my American culture class all the time. http://www.schoolhouserock.tv/America.html
Also, they were really impressed with Obama's inauguration speech, MLK's "I Have a Dream," and other news clips.
We use a really awesome, but pretty high level text called American Ways that has helped me figure out how on earth to approach American culture in a useful way. Even if I were teaching less able students, I'd read the book and use it as a way to design units/lessons. |

I hope you also have visited Remix America. http://remixamerica.org/
They've done a bang up job using the best streaming technology for video and there are lots of videos in the area of civics/history. They have a home page on EFL classroom and I've helped promote them a lot.

Hey there,
I've found a few things really helpful. I teach AP World and Geography here in Korea. You can try classzone.com - it's a companion website for the McDougal Littell textbooks. You might not be able to access all the features, but it's a wonderful website as far as resources and strategies.
If you have a few bucks to throw around, I highly recommend the CNN Millennium Series - Any of them - Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful. I believe national geographic does similar films. These are the documentary type specials you see on TV and the history buffs are glued to the screen. Very entertaining and informational. I suggest giving the kids some type of assignment to fill out that coincides with any video so they watch with a purpose. Anyways, good luck. You can PM me if you have anymore questions. |
