Recently I watched Bad Guy.
What do you all think about his films? My girlfriend absolutely loathes him.
In Bad Guy, a girl is tricked and forced into prostitution. The man who did this to her watches her have sex with customers through a mirror window. Later, she falls in love with him.

Did you ask her why?
Check out Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (봄여름가을겨울 그리고 봄). Very simple and incredibly beautiful. |

The above and 3-iron (빈집 in Korea) is cool as well.
He does a great job of showing the ugly side of Korea, so many Koreans hate his films. He's more popular overseas. |

She's studying aesthetics at SNU's graduate school, so she had a lot to say. |

3 iron is my fave, spring, summer... the bow are all good too
Koreans don't like him because he shows the sides of Korea they all walk about denying. it's seen as anti nationalistic and not 'our pride!' Also his films are seen as being European in style, not aesthitcally Korean... We must show our uniqueness and pride etc...!
ooooh, Dan Gun is spinning in his grave....
He gets very unfairly treated in the press and should get more recognition as being one of the country's all time best directors in my opinion, though a lot of his earlier stuff isn't up to much.... |

I think his films are usually very good. They are also very popular back home and I guess Old Boy is the only Korean film which is more popular back home. But I've also heard many Koreans criticising his films. My professor also pointed specifically that he didn't like Kim's films, and that was the only director he mentioned. |
