I would skip Itaewon, go to songtan.......... swear to god, it is well worth the half day trip. You can catch a bus to songtan at the nambu teminal, every 45 minutes.
The streets are lined with tailors, who are accustomed to serving westerners and their prices way better. Actually i can't remeber the name of the guy right now, but he's the first clothing tailor on the right as your walking down the main drag......you bring him a picture, or your own drawing, and he will measure you and whip it up in a few days. Tons of material to choose from or bring your own. Just fantastic! |

Is songtan really that good? what about the clothes shops - decent, funky, no ajumma stuff? and the shoes? i want some new, funky, shoes, that dont look like i picked them up from an 80's thrift shop. |

I use MErcury Tailor, run by a guy named Benjamin. He speaks English really well, and knows his stuff. My father, who wears suits pretty much every day, likes him so much he has shirts and suits made there and shppied over to Seattle. Every friend I've taken there has been happy with his service as well.
To get there, stand in front of McDonald's, looking out across the street. Turn to your right, and head up Itaewon, towards Burger King. You'll quickly come to an alley to the right... cross it, and it's your first entrance on your right... leading to a basement shopping area. Go down the stairs and Benjamin should be on your left as soon as you enter the main area.
If you have any other questions, let me know.

Universalis,
I know it depends a great deal on the material, but can you give us an idea of price for a decent quality suit at Mercury Tailor? TYIA. |

Songtan shopping is great.........shoes....don't get too excited but clothes not bad............better than Itaewon thats for sure.
I like tailor made stuff. I took a semester of fashion design and subscribe to In Style so im always whipping up something for adushi to make me. Usually does it for under 100 bucks too! |

Gmat,
I think it's about 250,000 for a custom-made suit. Maybe a bit less... I had a plush wool/cashmere blend long winter coat custom made there for 220,000.
I really can't say enough good things about his place. He's very nice and does grea twork.

Yeah shopping near the OSAN AB is awesome. Its like a little slice of shopping heaven.
I got my coat and most of my clothes from there. Its nice to have western sizes. Plus I saw a kickass suit that was a new style for 300k.
But its either that or a camcorder.
But yeah seriously get your ass down to Osan.
Yeah yeah I know you get off at Songtan bus station, but I have always called the area Osan by habit. |

if at all...don't waste your time or money having it done in Korea...I've had clothes tailored for the past 20 years and the best places in Asia are HK, Bangkok, and Tokyol...even the tailors there will attest to the poor workmanship in Korea...just like everything else, I suppose...
If you can't get away, good luck...I guess a summer dress isn't the same as shirts, pants, and jackets so maybe it doesn't matter...
