|

Hello,
I am posting to get any help/advice/feedback regarding a problem I'm having with my hagwon. I bought a ticket about a week and a half ago to Japan for Chuseok. On Monday morning, my hagwon informed us that travel out of Korea for Chuseok was not allowed, and that we would face a quarantine if we left. I explained that I already bought at ticket, but they told me that I cannot go. When I said I'd agree to being quarantined, the simply said I cannot go anyway. Also, we are to turn in our passports after Chuseok to show that we obeyed this rule.
I feel that that I am at least entitled to compensation, or to be able to accept the quarantine.
Is it legal that they make these requests?
Thanks for your time!

They have no right to demand to see your passport. It`s the property of your government and shouldn`t be handed over lightly. |

First of all, this in no way sounds like a place that you want to work at. Second, they have absolutely no right to your passport. So, go on your vacation and refuse to give your passport to them. I doubt that they would fire you and if they did, this would give you an opportunity to find a better job. Also, you could probably take them to the Labor Board over that.

Absolutely do not give your passport to them. They have no right to claim it.
Assure them you're not leaving the country, but that you're going out of town (visiting a friend in X), and go anyway. |

No need to lie. Tell them straight up it's absolutely none of their business and if they fire you over that, you're going straight to the Labor Board. |

Don't mention your trip at work again.
Go on your trip.
When you return, don't mention it at work.
It's highly unlikely that they will ask to check your passport, but if they do then you could either refuse to give it to them, or give it to them and wait and see what they do.
I'd bet that they do nothing, because they need you to be in the classroom teaching your classes. Anything else would give them a major headache.
Just make sure you don't catch the 'flu while you're away! |

It is illegal to ban you from traveling. Your contract states you can take a vacation. Does it state specifically you cannot travel to Japan? I dont think so. It's not their business where you go on your vacation. Don't let them bend you over. Stand your ground and enjoy your vacation...then look for another school. Check with tax office to make sure they are paying your taxes and pension...most likely they arent. |

Go on your vacation.
Japan is worth visiting. You should not consider this issue for more than a second. Don't worry about their b.s. threats. |

I agree with both of the options. Either go and don't tell them - good option if you want to keep working there, or tell them you are going and they can suck it up - good option if you don't care if you work there anymore.
My academy has no problem with us travelling for the holiday. We have to record our temperatures when we get back. |
