Does anyone have experience of getting a Chinese visa? The Chinese Embassy website seems to have some contradictory information, it says you can AND can't go to the embassy in person. Would it be easier to get a travel agency to sort it for me?
I'm after a single visit visa for a few days in Beijing.
Any tips on 'Great Wall for the day hikes' would be appreciated too. |

My friend and I went to Beijing for summer vacation. Getting a visa is easy...just print off the form and take it along with two passport pics to any travel agent. It cost 170,000 each and our visa was ready in about a week.
Here's the link for the visa: http://www.china-embassy.org/chn/hzqz/zgqz/P020070611087242661716.pdf |

170000 yikes you can see why they don't just issue free 90 day visas. Still in the end it costs them lo't of tourist dollars by having visas for rich countries. I can understand making poorer countries like Nigeria get visas but not rich ones. I can imagine that buying tourist visas scares away a lot of tourists. |

americans pay more for visas from china than others. we charge the chinese a ton to visit america, so they return the favor by charging us big dollars to visit them. |

http://www.chinaemb.or.kr/chn/lsqz/ls_qz/ls_qz_1/t229323.htm
multiple entry visas for americans cost the same as a single entry.
120,000 won for regular 4 day service.
being charged more than 140,000 is total BS.
you won't be charged more than 140,000 for any type of visa if you use one of the agencies on the list.

you can complain to the embassy if any of the agencies on the list charge you more than 20,000 above the embassy price.
every type of chinese visa for american passport holders is 120,000 won (plus maximum of 20,000 fee).
all other countries (except romania for some reason) the prices are:
35,000 for single
53,000 for double
70,000 for 6 month multiple
105,000 for 12 month multiple
as for day hikes.....jinshanling to simatai is what i suggest. organise it at your hotel. |

cheers, we aren't staying in a hotel but with friends.....are there any recommended agencies? How much did you pay? I found one company offering a shared bus there and back for $40. Is that expensive? |

go to dongzhimen subway stop, go upstairs/outside to the bus station there and look for a row of white mini vans. these guys all are looking to take people to the wall and pick them up later. bargain a lot, and get them down to 60 to 80 kuai a person. if you have more than 4 people its easier to get this price. there will be other people looking to do the same. |
