Hi! I posted a message a short while ago, and did get a reply although I still need further confirmation...so help me out if you can!
I've been offered (and turned down) a job at SLP in Uijeongbu. I turned it down because of all the horror stories I have read about SLP...however none if which have been in Uijeongbu. Is it possible that within the franchaise, there could be one "gold mine"...and that being in Uijeongbu??? The reason I'm still pondering this is because I really want to leave home and travel to Korea. I've been searching for a job now, for what feels like forever...and I'm at the point now where I just want to take anything! The recuiter is still pushing the job, and had some of the foreign teachers at the school to email me. (The teacher who I would be replacing and those that will be there still, after I get there.) They have all positive things to say about the school, and it sounds really tempting.
I should also mention that, I am a recent graduate ( B.Ed, major in English) however don't have the papers yet because my university does not give them out until May. From what I understand, this means that I will be working illegally in Korea until then. If I do choose to take this route, will I still get paid while I'm working up until May, or will my pay for the period before I recieve my documents be paid in a lump sum once the visa is processed? My concern (well, one of) is this...if SLP is as bad as they say, then if I am working under the table for 2-3 months until I get my visa, then they are in the position to with hold my pay for that time, or not pay me at all. Does any of this make sense?
Should I just wait until my university awards the documents, in May...and suffer in complete and utter bordom...at home??!!!
Any comments are greatly appreciated!! |

Well, if the teachers at the school are happy, and the ones who've left are too, that's the most solid reference a school can get. There are exceptions and this appears to be the mythic good SLP
About the degree, assuming you're in St. John's, take a run into the Arts building, and talk to someone in the registrars office. They might be able to do something, like give you a transcript saying that you completed your degree, or a certificate. Some immigration offices are starting to require transcripts anyway, so it can't hurt.
Another tip: MUN doesn't give replacement degrees, get a notarized copy, and leave the original safe on the Rock.
I'd wait till you got some sort of official proof of graduation before leaving, just because it puts you in a more stable position if there is trouble at the school. Go skiing at Marble, or get drunk on George Street.( Have a dark-n- dirty for me! )

Under the table + questionable chain (even if this branch seems an exception) = watch out. I'd caution you to keep everything legit or you might well be back on this board with a weepy tale in a couple months. |
