Please share any tips that you have about travel to and within Cambodia. Will be making my first trip there later in the year, having enjoyed neighboring countries...
After looking at a lot of testimonies on various sites, it seems that the police may hassle foreign tourists in certain areas, looking for entrapment and/or bribes. Is this true? I do plan to party, but not to the extreme, and I keep my head about me.
Regarding coastal areas to visit, what is your opinion of Sihanoukville and the nearby area? Are there other places that you recommend more highly, taking into consideration a social scene is desirable to me?
thanks a lot for any info that you care to offer!~ |

Cambodia is wonderful. I've been there 5 times now between 2001 and 2009 and its been very interesting to watch how it has, and hasn't, changed over the years.
If you're by yourself you'll probably be targeted more for scams and such, so I would consider trying to coordinate with others who are going, perhaps via Lonely Planet forums, etc. If you're crossing via land from Thailand, be prepared for about 5 scams minimum both on the Thai side and the Cambodian side of the border. Poipet, the border town en route to Siam Reap is pretty much a disgusting mass of all the worst elements in Cambodia. If you're flying in, it'll be much less of a hassle.

I never have had problems with cops themselves, in fact, most have been extremely helpful, especially if you're nice to them and not yelling. Not being an angry, ugly, loud foreigner goes a long way when dealing with problems.
That said, the government workers at the borders are corrupt prats who I wish every misery possible in this life or the next.
Sihanoukville is a great little town--think of it as a Thailand Lite--and I always enjoy spending time on the beach there and could envision myself retiring somewhere near there if I won a small lottery. Try to spend a day hiking the fort outside Sihanoukville. I forget the name, but its a former french outpost and it's worth hiring a motorbike driver to get you close there.
A lot in Cambodia is just luck, but it's a beautiful country that does have a dark side as well. It's very poor, so keep that in mind whenever someone is hassling you for money. Sometimes a little goes a long way for them.
Feel free to PM me with any questions. I was just there this April with my girlfriend and enjoyed it yet again. |

I travelled by myself there with no problems at all. I bought herb, but not women. And I didn't get too drunk.
I felt quite safe, but I kept my head up and primarily stayed on the siem Riep - Phenom Phenn tourist trail. |

I loved it!
I went for my week vacation, and 'smoked', drank, and ate like a king. Read up on guesthouses online and try to find a clean one. The food is usually very high quality and reasonably priced.
Sihanoukville is great. I went in the off season so there weren't as many drunk gap year kids as you would normally expect in a party town. Id recommend renting a scooter or a real motorcycle if you know how to drive one.
The people are incredibly friendly, especially when you're used to dealing with angry adjoshis all day.
You can PM me if you want any specific advice. I stayed in Sihanoukville the whole time except for 2 days in PP. |
