Thanks to EPIK cracking down on vacation time, my co-teacher told me I have to come in to school every day except for my generous 8 day vacation time. She was even nice enough to make a list of duties I need to complete before the end of the summer.

1. Make namecards for the plastic food, toys, school supplies, etc. in the glass display cases lining the hall. Easy, got it done in a few lazy hours.

2. Orgazine by level, record the author, title, suggested level, write school textbook related vocabulary and expressions. Of 680 books. Now, I don't think we have 680 books in the English library but there are a few cabinets full of unused books.

3. Write a daily log of what I did that day.

4. Develop a summer program for students including reading books to them, watching DVDs, writing activities.

5. Lesson plans for next fall semester.

Sad So much for that relaxing for a few weeks, teach a camp the last week and then school starting in Sept. that I was looking forward to. By all means, let me hear your tale of sorrow because I need to be comforted.

I had a huge disagreement with my school (who'd reneged on my extended vacation after I'd resigned for another year).

So they scheduled 'Writing Classes" and "Drama Classes" for me in alternate weeks (to stop me going abroad).

So, here I am, babysitting for 2 hours a day (in the afternoon). I guess I'm lucky, as I don't have to desk-warm in alternative weeks - and I only come to school for 2 hours a day. The K teachers' car park is full - everyday.

I've only taken 2 classes so far - and we've done bugger all. Today's writing 'lesson' saw us wander up the street and buy ice-creams.

It's a tough life - but someone's got to do it.

Roll on Thailand in October.

Tough break. They really don't get how a nice 2 week jaunt out of the country completely recharges my batteries.

I think besides the secretary, I'm the only teacher who's been here all day. Never had to do this at a hagwon...

Yeah I'm on the same deal for the Summer Holidays. Except they've organised 2 weeks of 6 hour a day conversation classes when I come back from taking 5 days of my prescribed holidays the week after next. Add that to two weeks of 6 hours a day for Summer Camp and it's not the best holiday. Their management of teachers sucks. They're trying to 'get the most out of me while I'm here'. Seemingly they don't realise the best way to get the most out of me would be to give me a break between semesters.

I'm tired and I no longer care...bring on the last two months.

I WAS going to be riding the desk, but for some reason the VP let me take a full two weeks off instead of 10 calendar days, plus, I can come in at 12.30 before my afternoon reading classes. The Principal is "concerned about my lunch" so I can come in after lunch, like, I'm incapable of bringing my own from home.

Good things do happen!

I hope you're banking some serious OT pay for that. Because you should be.

My time technically adds up to six teaching hours a day as well, but only for the first week. After that, it's only three a day for two weeks, so I decided not to kick up a stink about OT, especially since they've given me four days of "working from home" time at the end of it all, extending my six workdays of vacation to ten. Since I'm at the desk 8:30-4:30 for all three weeks, and only teaching 3 hours a day in the last two, I can even do my "working from home" "homework" during that time and not have to worry about during my vacation.

I get pretty insanely bored doing desk warming, so I also asked my main co-teacher to let the students know I'll be in the EZ for all those extra hours, if they want to stop by for any kind of anything. Honestly, I'd rather hang out with the students than try to entertain myself. A day with students goes by in a flash -- a day staring at the computer screen drags on for eternity.

I really feel for people who have to sit at their desk during summer break. That would really chap my caboose. I'm pretty sure that if they did that to me I would make sure I took all of my vacation during teaching days.

If you'd like to cover my classes at my hagwon I'll happily trade places with you. Oh, except for the 3 days of vacation I get next week.

I can't wait to get back to a public school next year. Yeah, desk warming sucks while you're doing it, but it beats working.

I hear you waynehead but I'm the opposite. Working is much more enjoyable than sitting and I loathe busywork. It's not so much as the lack of vacation, more the lack of doing anything productive that gets me.

It's my last day of deskwarming. In the last 4 weeks I've taught 5 classes at my main school. Over winter break I deskwarmed for 5 to 6 weeks with only 2 of those with summer classes for 2 hours.

Apart from 4, (and maybe 3) none of these are your responsibilities. I'd have told her to go fly a kite. As for 3 I'd write a one sentence phrase.

I keep a typed out resignation letter on my desk. If anyone tells me I should just sit at my desk for no good reason I'm gone. It worked for me this semester.

Could you tell us the story please! I'd be interested in something like this in the future.

Yep. My sentiments exactly. No vacation, two and a half months to go - and my motivation has been crushed. I can't even be bothered making lesson plans anymore. Bring on the games!

This latest public school deskwarming stuff is another classic case of East versus West.

Koreans only know 'the rules and the stick' - whereas Westerners work harder by having our internal motivations activated.

East and West - they'll never be compatible.
