Truthfully?
That's not what you want (even though you think you do). PowerPoints are an aid to presentations, not an end unto themselves.
All you need for a good PowerPoint:
1. Stick to the 6X7 rule (six lines per slide, 7 words per line).
2. Progressive points (each point comes in on a click rather than all at once).
3. No fancy transitions (fade is good).
4. Graphics should not be the focus of a slide (unless you're analyzing a photo or something), so keep them smallish.
There are times when you want to break the rules. I very occasionally embed video or audio for listening, and I have a flash random number generator as well as a flash timer embedded in most of my classroom PowerPoints, but those serve a functional purpose. |

I agree with the_beaver. Graphics have to be relevant to your presentation, otherwise they are a distraction. |

Now that you mention it, I've been looking high and low for a flash based timer and random number generator to use for my PowerPoints. Do you have a link you could share? |

I think you have to make the distinction whether the presentation is for during a lecture or post lecture viewing. I always make 2 copies. One for in person, no more than 3/4 words/slide --- the other, with more script for viewing/reading online. Yes, always use images if possible.
We have all that stuff on EFL Classroom. Thousands of the best ppt backgrounds Here
Milkman -- see our new Teacher's Toolbox. You'll find timers / spinners / ppt add ins galore.
Cheers,

Right. i agree. But it is sooo hard to find graphics that match the presentation I am currently building. |

The stopwatch is at http://www.online-stopwatch.com/. The random number generator I made myself with Flash and you wouldn't want it because it's personalized (and I have no ability with Flash so my coding, what little of it is there, sucks ass bad). |
