|

Released today as part of the 2009 Human Development Report was the latest Human Development Index (HDI), a summary indicator of peoples well-being, combining measures of life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and GDP per capita.
This years HDI has been calculated for 182 countries and territoriesthe widest coverage ever. The estimates, which rely on the most recently available data compiled by the UN and other international partners, are based on 2007 data.
In a nutshell, this a list of the best countries in the world to live.

interesting notes:
Korea: 26
Japan: 8
USA: 13
and apparently Afghanistan is not the worst place in the world to live. |

Interesting that the country with the most obese people in the world is the second best country to live in. Even more so when we know that life expectancy is one of the criteria. |

Not true. The latest statistics I saw, had the United States with 25% obesity, compared with Australia's 20%. Still nothing to be proud about, though. Wow, Wiki are fast!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index
Life expectancy for Caucasians & immigrants in Australia is very high. Where it fails, is for indigenous Australians, some of whom have problems with alchohol, & lack of access to good health care, & who have lower life expectancy & higher infant mortality. Very similar sad story to native North Americans in Canada / USA.
Life Expectancy from Wiki for Australians: Male 79.25 y / Female 84.14 years. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy |

Apparently we have different sources: http://www.forbes.com/2008/06/20/australian-obesity-survey-markets-equity-cx_jc_0620markets06.html
But it is indeed interesting that their life expectancy is so high while their obesity rate is so high at the same time. |

2008 statistics from the same 'Forbes' source:
Rank Country %
1. Nauru 94.5
2. Micronesia, Federated States of 91.1
3. Cook Islands 90.9
4. Tonga 90.8
5. Niue 81.7
6. Samoa 80.4
7. Palau 78.4
8. Kuwait 74.2
9. United States 74.1
10. Kiribati 73.6
11. Dominica 71.0
12. Barbados 69.7
13. Argentina 69.4
14. Egypt 69.4
15. Malta 68.7
16. Greece 68.5
17. New Zealand 68.4
18. United Arab Emirates 68.3
19. Mexico 68.1
20. Trinidad and Tobago 67.9
21. Australia 67.4
And I'd question the 2009 figure of 26% for Oz, when the population of Australia in that report is clearly wrong.

26% of its 15.1 million |
When I left Australia in April 2009, it was around 21 million. Unless of course, there have been 6 million heart attacks induced by obesity!
But thanks for the link. Food for thought there, & pun intended! |

That sure looks quite fishy. I guess one young researchers mistyping might have made many proud Australians out there. |

I've always maintained that the people who live on tropical islands are laughing at the Apologists & Bashers on this forum. |

Those lazy islanders. Never do anything but lie in the shadow, enjoy life and last but not least, laughs. (I'm playing the role of the basher now) |

#26 sounds about right for Korea. They have developed a lot and are doing well, but are still far behind the leading countries in ways of human rights, worker rights, health care, and education.
They are ranked as very high human development. If you look at the countries above Korea, I can't see Korea rising too much more in future years. Maybe above Greece??? |

I also agree, #26 isn't too shabby considering the competition. 3rd best Asian country (not sure if I count Hong Kong as a separate country from China), and Singapore is quite small too, making it very manageable. |

In my experience, availability is good but the expertise of the doctors isn't the best, and it isn't free.
National health care insurance is great if you have the sniffles but if you get cancer or something awful, it covers almost none of your care.

I think the gap between 26 and 10 is rather small....also you have to note that the several nations on that list have populations under 1,000,000. That's one problem with these indexes... |
