|

Hello there, this is my first post in this forum. I'm in the process of applying for teaching work in Korea (for the second time round) from the UK, and I've been applying for many different recruitment agencies in the hope that this will give me more choice of work, or at least increase my chances of finding work soon (it's taking some time). However, I came across a recruiter ad today which claims this:
Quote: |
Tips for job searchers: Working with few Recruiters might be good idea but not more than 3 three.
- We just want to tell you few things as far as trusting each other. As much as we enjoy working with teachers, one of the issues we have is with teachers who are searching for a position with as many agencies as they can.
- There are a few reasons why that can be problematic:
- 1. Schools deal with many agencies and they don't like seeing the same
applicant come through several sources. It reflects somewhat negatively
on the applicant and the schools often pass it over as they know that if
this is the case, the teacher is likely interviewing with way too many
schools for them to bother spending their time with the process.
- 2. Many agencies work together and help each other out. We have several partners
that we work with, so if you also happen to apply with one of them, once again,
it just causes confusion. |
Now this has never occurred to me before. Apply for only 3 recruiters? I've lost count of the number of recruiters I've applied for! Have I been shooting myself in the foot as they suggest, or are they just bullshitting me so I'm more likely to work with them instead of someone else? |

Yeah I saw that too awhile back haha. I've used 392847234213 recruiters and nothing has happened so I would not worry about it (for hagwons, that is), I believe this is just them trying to scare you a bit. The only time anything happened was when another recruiter offered a position, and it turned out i had already interviewed at the school and turned it down. It definitely wasn't a big deal though. |

had loads on the go. Decided the first one to find me a placement i actually wanted and not whatever they were trying to fill would have me sign on so they could collect the finders fee. Youre doing it right. Theres more than enough recruiters out there, the only bad thing about it is when one or two actually do seem to work quite hard only to be pipped at the post. Ah well, thats competition for you. |

A week or so ago I made a big long post on this very subject. If you're applying for a public school, one recruiter is all they'll accept.
But if it's a hagwon job you're looking for, use as many as you can reasonably handle. You'll be getting late night phone calls, and many different details to sort out and consider. Keep a log/chart of the locations, pay, vacation (usually standard), contract offers, etc. to help keep track. In the meantime, get your documents in order and on hand ready to send off to the one you choose.
Zippy had the same idea as Ippy here:

But even that's not a guarantee that you'll get a good one. So keep reading the boards and have a Plan B backup--either go home or set you're sites on something better if the placement you get turns horribly wrong. You just never can tell till you get there.
Some recruiters offer to assist you AFTER you get on the ground. That's a good choice, because they could be available to help you get out of a sticky situation and find you a better job (and help with all the visa confusion) if the first one turns into a nightmare scenario. |
