I have to teach a parents class at my school. Does anyone have advice as to how to go about doing this?
Any suggestions on books or websites?
I dont really have a curriculum and their ranges of speaking/comprehension abilities are all over the place. |

Keep it simple fun and focussed.
Help them mostly with pronunciation and every day conversation.
Help them to help their children, you can even do story reading with them, so they can read the stories to their children.
Use your imagination! |

Also, think of ways that the parents could naturally talk to their kids in English. What would a mother or father actually want to say to their kids in English? Some phrases for behavior and household activities: make your bed, clean your room, do your homework, wash the dishes; what happened? Where have you been? What did you say? Where were you? Okay, that's enough, Look at me, The reason you can't do that is because...Where are you going? How long will you be? Is that true? What do you mean?
There are so many of these, and you can begin scaffolding these sentences to extend them for all kinds of activities. Lots of room for roleplays too. |

That sounds great,but I was just informed by one of my co-teachers that when she spoke with the parents they wanted more of me talking and having them basically saying I like apples. I have a book which is used for my parents class ( by the way is two hours which I think personally is to long)that claims to have the parents work with a partner on certain exercises. My co-teachers now tell me they want me to break every part of each chapter down by each page and each word and no partner work. I was then asked to make a sheet with at least 10 phrases they could say to me if they have a problem in the class with the learning process. One co-teacher wanted me to also type up conversational sentences. I said no to her and the reason I gave her was I will type a conversation script for you, I will type the paper with the phrases for you and even break every little word down,but I will not add more items onto the process.  |
