KT said yesterday it plans to offer four pricing schemes for the iPhone and other smartphones in the middle of next month.
The four packages comprising voice, data and messaging services will cost 35,000 won ($29.5), 45,000 won, 65,000 won and 95,000 won, a company spokesperson said.
"We reported four new smartphone pricing plans to the Korea Communications Commission on Sept. 25, which we hope to start in mid-October," the spokesperson said.
The nation's No. 2 mobile carrier said last week that it obtained KCC's approval to sell Apple's iPhone plans, becoming the first Korean company to do so.
KT currently offers several fixed-rate data plans, but they do not have smartphone-only ones. He said the company plans to roll out more competitive data plans for smartphones and other handsets following its announcement on Friday that it will slash its mobile data rates.
Among the options, a 45,000-won bundle plan offers 500 megabytes of data, which are enough for users to not only surf the web but download music and other files. The package includes 200 voice minutes and 200 text messages. In the United States, a typical iPhone charge is about $70 ($40 voice + $30 unlimited data) without text messaging.
A 35,000-won tariff plan offers 100 megabytes of data, while a 65,000-won plan offers 1,000 megabytes of data, and a 95,000-won plan offers 3,000 megabytes of data.
KT cut its data rates by 60 percent to 20 won per megabyte, from the current 50 won under its 10,000-won plan that offers 200 megabytes of data.
In a bid to boost its data revenue, KT plans to roll out the iPhone as early as next month and other smartphones, while planning to launch its application store in November. KT said it has yet to decide the pricing of the iPhone, saying it is negotiating iPhone subsidies with Apple.
Meanwhile, Daum, Korea's No. 2 web portal, plans to give away the highest specification iPhone 3GS to all of its 1,000 employees as Chuseok gifts once the phone is launched in Korea. The internet firm also plans to support iPhone data plans for two years. The move came as Daum, which sells two applications for video-sharing and map services on Apple's App Store, looks to expand its iPhone-related business.

Those prices aren't bad. I would probably go with the 45,000 won plan and just not use data very much. Hopefully the phone is heavily subsidized! |

I've heard that it will cost between 200K and 300K with a contract. |

45,000 won isn't that bad, but I'm guessing in Korea they don't do free nights and weekends . As for the data, how much web surfing would the 45,000 won plan cover (time-wise)? Not much I assume. |

45,000w is good if you don't make many calls. In Korea, you only get charged for minutes on calls you make. Not calls you receive.
As for the 100mb of data. Don't watch Youtube videos or download too many apps. Definately wouldn't download any podcasts or internet radio. Good for just checking email and surfing the web. I think the 65,000 plan is the sweet spot. 1gb / month means you don't have to think about how much data you've used.
My normal cell phone bill with SK is around 40,000-50,000 depending on usage. Add an extra 15,000 is worth the convenience of using Daum Maps, Web surfing, and streaming radio/podcasts on the go.
I went into KT today and they said the reservations on the iPhone aren't available yet, but closer to the launch date, you can reserve one. I recommend people to reserve one if an iPhone is what you want.
Cheap price, decent Data plans.... maybe my doom and gloom about the iPhone won't happen. Just maybe. |

Wait, really? With any service provider minutes only go away for calls you send and not receive? That is fairly awesome. |

This sounds semi-awesome. As long as WIFI is enabled, I'll definitely start thinking about upgrading after Christmas (if they come out in Nov as planned.) |

I'm a bit confused. Is KT the same as Anycall? Or is it Show? I feel like I've never seen a KT store, just SK and LG.
Here's hoping I can pick one up on an E2 visa. |

Anycall is the mobile phone brand of Samsung. For example, PAVV is the Samsung brand for televisions.
CYON is the mobile phone brand of LG.
The KTF "Show" store is/will now [be] called Qook. |

I got KT aka Qook TV and internet too, I'm pretty sure I can get a good discount on all 3 services if I get the KT cell phone service. |

Yep. As soon as I start working again I'm hoping I can get a sweet package for Cable TV + home internet + Cell phone plan (iPhone) + Wibro. |

Can I use my iPhone (original, not 3g) from the states? Or will the Korean iPhones operate under a different GSM frequency? |

That's great news.
Will any foreigner be able to obtain a contract? I think i heard someone mention that they only let us have crap phones, or have i heard wrong?
If i can get an iPhone it will stop me getting a iPod Touch.
Are there any apps relevant to Korea/Seoul or have none been developed yet because of the absence of the iPhone? |
