Hey everyone,
I'm probably going to get blasted by everyone and told that I'm stupid for not taking this position....and maybe you are all right....maybe I am.....BUT because there was a conflict for vacation time, I had to decline the offer (another teacher was taking vacation at the same time that I had requested for my brother's wedding...which I refuse to miss)...

Anyway guys...the point of this post is not to get blasted...it's to inform anyone who might be considering this school, that it has an awesome working staff and is most definitely reputable in many ways.
When I set out...I personally blacklisted a good number of chains, SLP being one of them. I hesitantly reviewed the conditions, reviewed the contract and was surprisingly impressed. So, I opened my mind a bit and thought, what the heck, you might just find a diamond in the rough. So I agreed to have a phone interview with one of the employees. The employee had all the right things to say and I enjoyed speaking with her. However, I still wasn't convinced because I find it tough to trust someone I don't know. Meanwhile, in the background was another employee who eagarly wished to speak to me. A long story short, she was also from Atlantic Canada, and we had many common friends...The whole small world thing...So after many discussions through email and on the phone I was absolutely convinced that this was a great school. The coordinator has gone out of her way to be so pleasant and kind and helpful. She has even agreed to help me in any way of finding another job if she can be of assistance. Also worth mentioning, I recommended this school to another friend of mine who has since signed with them and will be arriving mid February. Hopefully in a few more weeks we can see how her experience is going. As it turns out she knows 2 former teachers of the school, each of which speaks very highly of the school.

So I just wanted to spread the word, and share my great experience and dealings with this school and staff. They have a great team!!! They currently have an opening and if anyone would like to PM me, I can give you their contact information and share some more of my info on the school....

Double Thumbs up for SLP - Kangseo. Mr. Green

It all comes down to the individual school.

SLP has earned the title, "Slave Labor Program" due to the policies of many schools.

It's good you are happy with yours.

Personally, unless I knew someone VERY well at an SLP, and they told me EVERYTHING, I'd avoid every single one of them like the plague.

As I have posted many a time; it's not the school that is "bad," it's the school owner. Can't fault all Americans because GW is a screw up or hellofaniceguy is not nice! Can't fault Canadians because of..... anyways, if the school owner treats you with respect, no pay problems, contract problems, then you are lucky given that 99.9% of hokwon owners are for the birds and don't have the brains God gave goldfish. On another note, some teachers get burnt by owners big time and yet, fresh victims, er, I mean newbies or another teacher has no problem at all! It all comes down to personality and using finesse.

Let me get this straight: you have previously "blacklisted"(how?) schools you've never worked for; and you give this SLP school the big "thumbs up" even though you've never worked for them??!! In fact, you've never been to Korea yet, right? I'll give you credit for chutzpah....

When I say blacklisted you *beep*...I meant a mental note of chains with bad reputations...Compredez????? JEEEZZ
You've got it straight *beep*... I've never worked for them but I know two people who do, and two others that did...all of which had great experiences. They've been decent to me and for that I am appreciative. I was only speaking of the experience I had with them, limited as it might be, and of the collective experience my friends have had. So you know what, I think it's worth mentioning......But congrats on taking what was meant to be a nice experience, finding and extracting everything negative that you could find.

No, it's the school. Bad owners make the attitude at the school suck. Therefore, the school is also bad. Not just the owner.

I think what I stated about SLP (Sogang Language Program) was quite obvious, as well as how a school with a bad owner/director makes the SCHOOL someplace where you wouldn't want to work.

Duh.

You're really arguing over little words that make no difference.

"Blacklist"(n.) is a list of "undesirable" entities. "Blacklist" (v.) is to put an entity on a public blacklist or a private blacklist known to a select few. "Blacklisted"(adj.) refers to an entity on a blacklist. If you'd written " 'mentally' blacklisted" there would've been no need for confusion and no need for my inquiry. There would've been, therefore, no need for your unpleasant response.

My original point stands(and is supported to varying degrees by other posters, I daresay): be damned careful giving "yeas" & "nays" about employers, employees, countries... that you don't have FIRST HAND knowledge about. Moreover, if you go to a site like this asking for "advice", well, you're going to get it...pleasant or not. If you want to react angrily & choose to use insulting & rude language to a poster such as I(on my 2nd contract in S. Korea & 7th in E. Asia), well, so be it-that's your perogative. Do you think it helps your cause though?

Good luck in your job search. I would advise that a CERTAIN amount of flexibility is the key. But that's only me....

The "dope" and "jackass" responds....

Good points Mosley.

Why the name calling 2CuteNCanadian? You don't want to get 'blasted' for bringing it up (being crazy for turning the position down?), but start blasting the first person who disagrees with you? Contradict yourself and someone on this forum is bound to call you on it. Gypsy Trader is a good example...

...don't be a joseg!! Wink

As I mentioned peeps...The PURPOSE of this was for INFORMATION purposes. A helpful hint to those who are/were or in later months/years, considering this school. I personally had a formidable experience and chose to share it....lets just remember who threw the first stone folks....So, for those of which choose to be judgemental, condicending, and negative....fill 'yer boots!!!! I can't help a lost cause.....

Just a follow up...My friend arrived, and absolutely loves it there. Also, I got a "Happy Birthday" e-card from Jane, the school coordinator. This is a great team Smile

Hi, I used to work at an SLP, way back in 96. Ha ha we sure were raking in the dough then! And, didnt work nearly as many hours as you current bunch of teachers do! you sure have settled for way less than my generation would ever have, you new bunch of teachers! You guys really are too much. But I love ya! got to right?
A shout out to all my hommies in the class of'03 from class 0f 96!.
But thats not why Im posting. I am wondering if my friend, a woman who was on our office staff at the SLP Kangnam, initials LkN works at the Kangseo now?
ANy answers? I heard she went to Pundang, but changed. And is Kangseo near Bundang?
And, SLP was fun back then. Sure, we had problems, but we rolled with it man. It was fun. We laughed all the way to the bank. and had lots more free time. If they fired us, so what. We were needed and changed jobs. I think my old aquaintance is a good persson and if shes working there she'd never lead you astray. MAybe shes there is she?
