Hi All,

I just recently got hired to teach for a private school in S. Korea. I emailed them back a scan of the contract that I signed. If I change my mind, can I back out? I haven't sent in my documents to them yet, just the scan copy of their contract.

Thanks in advance for all those that respond to this.

If you haven't sent any of your documents, then there's nothing to worry about. Until you have received your visa issuance number, korean immigration does not care what you do.

Thanks for the reply. I'm having second thoughts about the hogwan I applied to. I wanted to wait around to see if I can get another offer, but I just felt a little pressured by the school to sign the contract ASAP. With the increased amount of applicants to teach in S. Korea these days, the market is very competitive. So, I also felt that if I didn't settle with this particular school, I'll be passing up an opportunity. Even though I have a Masters in Education, I was told by my recruiter that it may be hard for me to find a job because I'm Asian.

Thanks again for answering my question.

If you have a Masters in Education, do not work for a hagwon unless they're paying you 2.7 mil or more and you get more than 2 weeks of vacation. You can do better, much better, even if you're not the whitest girl around.

It will be pretty tough to get 2.7 mill at a hagwon and more than two weeks of vacation. A masters doesn't really matter since they can just hire some new grad and save a few bucks.

Maybe you can get that much money if they don't provide housing or other benefits, but it is uncommon.

Gil, can you give me an example of a hagwon that pays this much? SMOE doesn't pay 2.7 mill either.

Please prove me wrong.

I think it's very unlikely, ergo she shouldn't be working at a hagwon unless they blow her away with an awesome package.

It's time for you to find a new recruiter.

Seriously, with a MED you'll be in HELL at a hagwon, no matter how much they're paying you or how much vacation you get.

How soon are you looking to start working? Public/Private "school schools" (not hagwons) are starting their hiring now...school year starts in March.

If you can hold off your start date until then you're much more likely to find a great job.

^^^^^ this

Also public schools actually hire all year round due to teachers not making it, having emergencies back home, quitting, being fired. I've been hired for ps in June and October before.

You might also consider After School programmes. They usually pay around 2.4 mil, standard benefits and you only go to work for 5 hrs a day.....

Where? Can you show me their website? I don't buy it unless I see it.

2.7 mill for those kind of qualifications is about W600,000 more than average.

You don't find them advertised online because they are advertised through word of mouth. As long as you have a decent social network, there should be no problem finding a job where you can clear 3 mil a month and have somewhere around 6~12 weeks vacation a year.

Ah sorry guys I am not trying to be confrontational

Just from what I have seen over the years, 2.7 mill is really good.

And 3 mill with 6~12 weeks? I have never seen that assuming that housing is included as well. And did you say !!clear!! 3 million a month? Example please.

That is why I am curious where these people are working. What is the big secret?

The big secret is he's been looking for a very long time before choosing this one.
