Three people in my building are using Macs, and one person is using a regular PC. The three of us with the Macs are all are getting really lousy internet speed. Anyone know why this is?
I think we are using cable inernet - it comes on the same bill as the cable, anyways. |

What ISP are you all using and what speeds do they allow? That's the logical place to start.
That said, if you're on one of those dodgy cable + internet combos, I think you found your answer. |

I think I'm using the C&M (Cable and More?) company.
How do I figure out what speeds they allow? |

My isp is C&M.
I'm getting a DL speed of 4.7Mb/s, and an upload of .85 Mb/s.
Pretty far below average, correct? |

There is another thread about C&M being slow.
I get 9.2Mbs down, and 1.75 up, on KT Megapass base package through a 2 year old iMac (2.33Ghz), and wireless router network. When I bring home my 3 year old office Samsuck laptop, the speed is much worse. Unless you have an old G4 running Tiger, your computer won't have much bearing on speeds.
Are you using a router? Have you cleaned your cookies, cache and checked for spyware?
What browser? WHat version? What plugins does it have added?
Try these steps:
1.in the browser Menu -> Empty cache
and -> clear cookies
2.Turn off the Ipv6 setting:
a.Open System Preferences and click on the Network pane.
b. Select your currently used interface (Ethernet, AirPort, etc.) from the Show: menu.
c. Click on the TCP/IP tab.
d. At the bottom if you see a button which says Configure IPv6...' click on it and change the setting to Off. Press the Apply Now button.
3. Set up a new network location:
a. Open System Preferences and click on the Network pane.
b. Click "Assist me" and follow the instructions to set up a new location.
4. Repair permissions:
a. Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
b. Select your main drive from the left sidebar. (probably named 'Macintosh HD')
c. click "Repair disk permissions"
Restart. |
