Have any of you worked in Shanghai? How does life there compare to life in Seoul? Which do you prefer? Pros and cons would be great.

Shanghai's fun factor is proportionate to the size of your wallet. There aren't that many cheap/fun things to do there and everyone seems to be in a great hurry.

Seoul is a much more diverse and pedestrian city offering a lot more varied kinds of entertainment beyond the Opera, Concert Hall, expensive restaurant, "richie" stuff that Shanghai seems to offer. Seoulites, additionally, although they are usually in a great hurry, won't trample you/run over you on purpose because you are in the way.

Shanghai is not bad... but I was there for a week and was bored off my ass by the third day because of how little there was to do that didn't cost a whole lot of money.

I could never see myself getting comfortable in Shanghai like I could in Korea.

for the short term, shanghai, and for the long term, seoul.
i've lived in both... and shanghai is crazy fun. it lacks real culture, is a giant building site and is extremely materialistic, but there's so much energy there.

unlike poeticjustice, i had a great time there without spending too much. but the trouble with the place is that there's this huge ex-pat scene, places like xintiandi which are full of westerners paying western prices for entertainment. if you just do as the locals do, you'll pay a fraction of the price and also have a more interesting time of it.
i spent 4 months there.. the first 2 months was up there among the best times of my life. i was partying virtually non-stop, meeting people, etc., but i got burned out and ended up hating the last 2 months.

this is the thing about shanghai- it has no soul. seoul does, and thats why i'd rather live there in the long term. one year should be more than enough for shanghai.

I've only been to Shanghai on vacation for a grand total of two weeks, but I'd have to echo what people have said. There's no real 'street' nightlife, but there is a 24 mart near Logo's that tolerates the Family-Mart style drinking. Shanghai struck me as being very expensive for doing Western style hanging out, but still was a great time, especially if you're looking to study there (either in Uni or just Mandarin academies).

I've lived in Shanghai for about 1,5 year and about the same amount of time in Seoul. I do miss Shanghai! Granted, the situation was very different from the one I am in now, so that influences my feelings quite a bit. I went to Uni there on a scholarship and it was VERY relaxed, school was useless but fun, received more than enough money and I had a couple of friends there from my old college.

I don't know what some of the previous posters mean by 'expensive', I've never lived anywhere so cheap!! I ate the most delicious original Italian pizza close by my Uni for 50 kuai (roughly 5 euro), whereas I have to pay 15,000 won (double euro!) for the same pizza here. The food is SO divers and SO cheap (beats identical Korean food every day), shopping is heavenly and (again) SO cheap and even clubbing should be a bit cheaper than here (obviously you shouldn't go to Xintiandi, but why would anyone want to go there?!). Go to the normal places, don't drink to get wasted and you should be fine.
Sure, there aren't a whole lot of things to see in Shanghai, it's def. a bit more western, but really, how often do you visit the Palaces or Korean Folk Village here??! It's about day-to-day conveniences and Shanghai tops Seoul imo. Also, I don't enjoy the conservativeness of Korea, I'm always worried I'm doing something wrong, wearing too revealing clothes (and I dress quite conservatively already!), afraid of walking around with my bf, etc, etc. I hate feeling my freedom limited like that.

Seoul does have more soul and I always feel it's a big city with a small town feel. It's more charming, there's more nature, it's more quirky and more developed. One BIG pro here is that the people are much more 'westernized'. Even in Shanghai, you can't go a day without dozens and dozens of Chinese people staring/pointing at you and yelling hello or ohhhh foreigner (or worse). I really really HATED it. It was such a huge relief and a calming and positive experience to come here and not be made to feel like an animal for display in a zoo.

I could go on and on and on.... Overall, there are pros and cons to both cities, but for pure convenience I'd probably choose Shanghai.

I refuse to vote here because both are similar in their reputatons and development. Both can be considered livable and somewhat affordable. Both have experienced rapid modernisation and have a lot of fun things to do. There is no "VS." when comparing two somewhat similar locales that are a one-hour plane ride apart.

Try something more stark, like Ankara VS. Seoul. Or Bangalore VS. Lexington, Kentucky.

Sorry vallillo, didn't see your reply there. Well, to answer your question: I came to Seoul because I had met my (Korean) boyfriend while travelling here and my scholarship was only for a year, so when my time was up, I decided to come to Korea to be with him. Like I wrote, I've been here now for almost 1,5 year and it's really hard to make that choice...Shanghai or Seoul. They both have great and not-so-great things going for them. I haven't been back for a while, so the memory tends to get a bit selective Confused I guess people-wise it's much better here, I have to say I find most Chinese to be...a bit...ignorant (for lack of a better word) and living here is easier (yes, Koreans can be xenophobic and nationalistic at times, but it's not a 3rd-world country). On the other hand, I really miss my comfortable living style in Shanghai, where I was living like a queen Crying or Very sad (Though I guess with money you can do that here as well). Most importantly, there is all kinds of food, all affordable and Chinese food in itself is just delicious (but darn oily!!!) and so so divers. To me, food is one of the most important enjoyments of life and I'm not too happy with that in Korea... Everything is cheap- food, shopping, public transport, travelling around is easy, there's MUCH more to see than in Korea (besides Seoul and Jeju I really wouldn't know any other fabulous places)- even though it gets pretty boring in China as well. If you've seen one temple, you've seen them all.

The thing to ask yourself is what's most important to you? Is it money (I'm not a teacher, but I guess you could make a bit more in Korea), or are you looking for a completely different experience (I'd say China is a bit more unique than Korea), can you handle all the staring and stuff you'll get in China; is it important to you to be around many westerners (you'll find more in China)? One other thing I'd like to add is that language-wise, Chinese is much easier to learn than Korean. Sure, Hangeul is a piece of cake, but after that, it only gets harder. Whereas Chinese may have it's extensive collection of (complicated) characters, it's much easier to progress in IMO. It really depends on you and I also agree with the previous poster, both places are livable, interesting and it doesn't really matter much which one you pick. Either way, you'll be in a very central & convenient location in Asia.

Hmm...after rereading my post...I guess if you'd put a knife on my throat, I would choose Seoul, as long as I had enough money. Thinking back on my China-life, the people really did bug me and it was a big downer on an otherwise great experience. China is great, I loved it, but the people not so much. Koreans are a bit more worldly...? Seoul is a huge city, but still very cozy and divers (there's old and there's new, there's nature around the corner), Shanghai is more of a metropolitan grey city (with fewer and fewer authentic 'Old Shanghai' places). Esp. with the Expo coming up, I don't know if Shanghai is a good place to be right now.

Pfff, that was a long one Wink

Shanghai expensive? Give me a break. I was there for 8 months and have no idea what some of you are talking about. Compared to Seoul, at least.

One thing I will say is the food in Shanghai >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the food in Seoul. Well, pretty much anywhere in China or Japan or any other Asian country (except the Philippines) > the food in Seoul.

Like djmsnc, I won't vote. I enjoy both places equally and are both great places to live.

I will agree with: short term Shanghai and long term Seoul.

The two things that I can't really accept enough to live in Shanghai would be the weather (cold damp winters and hot humid summers) and the size of the city.

This was my experience as well and I was also there 4 months. It was fun at first and then I noticed how empty people were there. Many of the expats act rich like but usually are not making so much. It reminds me of Sydney in that it is fun but there is a lot of shark like people there. I was spending 30000 a month there hanging out with a rich crowd. This rich family used to take me out to dinner once a week and I would get driven back to my backpackers in a Mercedes by their driver. One time I looked at the bill and it was 6000 rmb ( 800 ) bucks for the four of us. I was always scared it would be my turn to pay.

It was fun but too busy for me so I went and lived in Shekou in Shenzhen. Shekou was a lot more chilled and more western like.
