If you don't have a visa logo on the front, then you cannot use the card abroad. I never had an International card from KB bank. You can easily get one with Hana Bank or KEB if this is any help. |

Yea it almost seemed like trolling or something instead of a real story. I gave her the benefit of the doubt... |

"check back tomorrow" means "it would bring me shame to tell you it will never work" |

I find it mind boggling that in this day and age Banks are not issuing client cards that cannot be used outside the country.
In Canada, banks issue client cards automatically that can be used overseas. There is no need to request a "special" international client card.
But not in Korea or Japan.
Why is this - anyone know the answer? |

That would be a new thread haha. Maybe their overdraft protection isn't good? They don't want to offer international support in English? Foreigners overdraw then run off to another country...? I think you can get quality international cards quite easily in Korea or Japan if you do something that makes more money than the average English teacher. If your income is greater, that gets their attention.
I have a Korean card with a visa logo on it that doesn't work overseas.
And the SC branches I went to said they weren't giving international cards to ferners. I got mine from KEB. |

I think it has something to do with not wanting foreigners to spend their own money outside of the country... It makes more sense but sounds ridiculous when coming from a so-called 'internationally-recognized' country such as Korea |

Has anyone had this experience before? You are in a Korean bank and are just moments away from the teller handing you a brand spanking new international card, when all of a sudden someone in another cubicle comes over and starts mumbling something about, "bla bla bla bla bla bla bla waygook sahram" Then the first teller looks up and says, "No card for foreinger." |

I have opened accounts at banks that have assured me I could have an international debit card only to be given an embarrassed apology when the officer finally notices the no foreigner rule in their regs. Don't think it was malicious; some banks don't have many foreigner customers and they don't know the regs. I still don't have an international debit card but I have lots of bank accounts. |

Yes, but my story is even better to get to that point. IBK had issued me an ATM for international use, and I did for over a year and 1/2. Then in Thailand 1/2 way through a month vacation the matalic strip went bad, contacted the bank, could not sent me one in Thailand, I had to request it at the bank in Korea!!! They would not do anything else. So I had to cut my vacation and go back to Korea. Story over?....no...
I get back to my bank that I had used for almost two years, and requested the new card...oops no even with the old card and my visa card...I needed my bank book to get a new card, but it was packed in with 8 boxes as I was moving to Incheon for a new job. So screw it, left and headed north.
Finally.....Oops no, once I got set up and went to an IBK bank yes the same thing happened that you stated, they get ready to issue me a new card and in her hand when hajhdkjahf and sorry foriengers do not get. Government tells banks no give. (Oh, this was a lie the government had even did a press release stating that they had not told the banks to do this.) |

I've read this before, about the press release. I would love a link to this press release in both Korean and English if anyone has got it. |
