I have a group of high level students - who constantly say "Whatever" during class when they are not interested in listening....

The Korean co-teacher (pathetic) thinks its funny and that there is nothing wrong with saying "Whatever"

In fact - she has started using that word also, even though I had told her it is rude to use that word - especially when a child uses it towards the teacher.

The wiki definition of Whatever is -

Quote:
"Whatever" is a slang term meaning "whatever you say" or "I don't care what you say". The term is used to dismiss a previous statement and express indifference. In the late 20th century and early 21st century, the word became a sentence in its own right; in effect an interjection, it is used as a powerful conversational blocking tool, leaving the responder without a convincing retort. Anything they do or say can simply be blocked by the retort of "whatever".

Therefore - isn't "Whatever" the same as 즐 (KIN, Jul) which the Korean teacher has told my students they are strictly not allowed to say?

If Whatever is the same as 즐 Basically the Korean teacher is telling the students that they cannot say bad Korean words - however they can say the same bad words - if they say it in English?

That's why people say it. It's annoying. Next time your co-teacher needs you to do something say it to her.

I love when Koreans try to tell us what is and isn't rude/inappropriate usage of English.

My favourite is when a student tells another student to "F off" and the K co-teacher just smiles at him because she's happy he's using English. Laughing
