Is EPIK or is it just some recruiters raising the bar for applicants? One recruiter said that applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and above to qualify for an EPIK position; plus reference letters must be scanned showing original signature. Also, they want to know every school you attended from elementary and up. An FBI job? The fact that they are putting some kind of emphasis on GPA is interesting Maybe a good thing after all.
Has anybody else noticed this trend? Has it become an official EPIK policy?

How will that be possible when not all countries use the GPA system? |

It states in the ad:
Quote: |
Non-North American applicants should submit an equivalent of GPA which may be the total college mark or grade earned. GPA score or cumulative grade/mark earned by an applicant in college should be included in the resume. |

If they actually did that they would also have to take into account that some of us went to more prestigious/academic colleges than others. Some colleges are just flat out HARDER. This makes no sense and I believe is a lie. |

So could you tell us how first, upper second and lower second are converted into an American GPA? I'm sure the Korean recruiter couldn't. |

I don't know. I am not the recruiter, but here is something that is sure to make you laugh. (except if you really want the job)

ADDITIONAL EPIK APPLICATION DOCUMENTS:
As EPIK continues to attract numerous applicants worldwide and qualified candidates fiercely compete for slots and school placements, NIIED has come up with additional qualifying documents to screen applicants such as:
Cumulative GPA Score or Tertiary Marks/Grade
Starting this recruitment season for positions commencing February 2010 EPIK requires all applicants to submit a GPA for post secondary degrees (graduate & undergraduate) earned by an applicant.
Failure to do so will result to automatic application failure. Grade Point Average, or GPA, is the means by which total performance in school, usually in college, is calculated.
Non-North American applicants should submit an equivalent of GPA with accompanying details. Since most countries have individual grading systems unique to their own schools.
You are also required to provide the highest GPA score or grades/marks used by the institution you graduated from. Your GPA info/grades or marks should look like this: 3.0 (your GPA) / 4.3 (highest GPA).
GPA score/grades or marks should be included in the resume & be written on the EPIK Application Form
2X Reference Letters (Only Professional and Academic References are Acceptable)
All EPIK-National Applicants are required to submit to 2 Reference or Recommendation letters. The program only accepts professional references issued by supervisors or management.
An applicant may submit academic references issued by former teachers. References issued by friends, colleagues, acquaintance, or family members are null and void.
Acceptable Reference Details:Only Professional & Academic References
Should be scanned copy of the original ( ONLY in pdf or jpg file)
Should be manually signed (ink signature) & dated by issuing personnel
Should bear the full contact details of the school (for academic reference) or company (for professional reference)
References issued by Korean schools in Korean are acceptable
References written in languages other than Korean & English should be officially translated in English IMPORTANT APPLICATION DATES:
Application Period: Until Filled (May Close Sooner Due to Influx of Applications from N. America & Europe)
Orientation Period: February 20, 2010
Contract Term: February 26, 2010 February 25, 2010
School Year: 2010-2011, 1st Semester
Interview Start Date: October 1, 2009 (Only for those who emailed a completed application dossier)
IMPORTANT REMINDER
At this point, emailed documents suffice. We understand that it is common for most HR Firms in Korea to require applicants to submit originals. However, we implore applicants to exercise extreme caution since originals are extremely sensitive papers, which are only necessary in processing a teaching visa called E2. Employers at both the public and private sector never require original documents during the application process.
l Be informed that it is crucial to be represented by a duly license HR partner of the Ministrys EPIK. Applicants working with multiple HR firms are perceived negatively by the authorities as it creates confusion & decelerates the national database.
l If your completed application dossier (details enumerated above) has been submitted to the EPIK by one of the 18 license HR Partners of the Ministry, it will be in your best interest not to contact others including us. However, be informed that out of hundreds of recruiters placing teachers in Korea, only 18 have exclusive contracts with the Ministrys EPIK and fewer have contracts with school boards that will be hiring independently early winter of 2009.
Jeju Island & Metropolitan Cities (Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Daejeon, Gwangju, & Incheon)
Due to influx of qualified candidates for this semesters intake (September start), it only took approximately 5 weeks to fill out all metro and Jeju public school vacancies. It you are keen on securing a post in Koreas metropolis for the next EPIK-National intake, it will be in your best interest to submit a completed dossier ASAP. Those who successfully secured public school appointments this September in highly contested areas applied as early as December 2008.

What I find ridiculous is the EPIK application emphasis on listing all schools including elementary schools. |

Oops! Youre right. But they are figuring the GPA into a tier system. I scanned it too quickly.

EPIK don't have any official GPA score you must have, nor do the Korean immigration offices. It would be crazy to ask all the applicants from the 6 countries other than USA to try and work out their own GPA as you couldnt get any legitimate comparison as every country's system is different.
I think this is a recruiter trying to lift the bar himself, aware that only a few level 3 applicants will get in for March 2010 if they dont have any TESOL, a suitable major such as English or literature, or if they have not obtained a 'good' academic university diploma etc etc
The constant EPIK advertising happening now will bring in a high number of applicants for 2010, but a good number of these applicants may get eliminated after the interview, often without the real reason told to them, or they will give up along the way in frustration.
A shortage of applicants - you lower the bar, and have a reasonably loose criteria for hiring
More applicants than jobs - you raise the bar and tighten the paperwork thus eliminating applicants who would have got in easily the year before. |

Some English teaching companies in Japan require this also on a resume for immigration. Maybe they are taking a cue from there. |

EPIK needs to know your own schooling location because they need to assess if you are a native speaker.
If you did any of your k1-12 schooling in another country (that is not one of the 7 qualifying countries) they check. You must be educated in your passport country or one of the 6 others qualifying from about age 10 and above to qualify.
This is the Korean government's criteria for assessing you as a native English speaker - you must prove 10 years of your own schooling in a qualifying country. All of middle, high school, and your university studies. |

A 'B' average wouldn't be such a bad requirement. It'd be the first standard put up to keep academic slackers out. As it stands now, there are no requirements other than a college diploma from one of the preferred seven English-speaking countries. |

Sometimes you get a dick for a Professor that screws over you GPA. Your GPA is 50% luck, unless you pay for pick-a-prof, which I didn't. |
