I was looking us some facts on kimchi on wiki. I found this to be interesting.

Quote:
Kimchi is the name of an animated character on the children's series Chowder (tv series). The creature is presumably the pet of the lead character, Chowder, as he resides in a bird cage next to his bed. Kimchi is a cloud of speechless gas with two eyes, he communicates via flatulent noises.

I was wondering if any of you know when hot peppers were introduced to Korea. I think it was around the 1700's but need a source. A friend of mine claims that kimchi might have came from China and not invented in Korea. I want to argue that kimchi isn't kimchi without the hot peppers. That it would be just pickeled veggies.

Of course, I also want to use this to point out to Koreans that without outside influence (foreigners) Korea would be a bland flavor place. Imagine having to ask Koreans if it's too spicy.

The hot chilli pepper was introduced by the Japanese. The Portuguese originally brought the hot chilli peppers to Japan. The original Kimchi without chilli pepper would have been more like Water Kimchi.

The Water Kimchi is quite bland I can take it or leave it. Same with the cold noodles or Kong-guksu
