Hello all!

I need a new computer, and have decided to give Apple the boot! I want to have a new deck built in Yongsan. I want something that will play some decent warez and generally not give a man too much grief. Nothing crazy (I would like to be able to play games like Arkam Asylum, FIFA, Street Fighter IV, and Football Manager) I suppose. I'll need a monitor as well.

So...why am I telling you this? Good question. I need help.

I was good with my warez back in the x86 days and DOS and all that. Then I got a Mac gifted to me...and my knowledge died. I know a little...but not enough. What I am hoping for...is a list of components that you would want in a decent system. The list should be simple and comprehensive...something I could hand over to the guy at Yongsan and he would not then need to ask a load of qualifying questions. I would also (if you don't mind) like the details for your preffered Yongsan computer builder.

So...in short...a system...with monitor...for under 2 million won.

I would also like to know how you protect yourself from viruses these days...especially those of you who download from torrent sites and the like.

Thanks in advance for any help that you guys can give me.

The best reply will win a beer at Hooters on the day I get the P.C built! Assah!!!

With monitor for under two million? You can get a pretty spectacular machine for that price. Sorry, I have not details.

Well...2 million is the upper limit really...including monitor. 1.5 would be optimum...BUT...I understand that sometimes more is more.

O.K....

I have been looking around on the net...how much would this go for in Korea? What would you change to make it better?

CPU: Intel Core i7 860
Motherboard: Gigabyte P55-UD3P
RAM: G.Skill 4GB DDR3-1333
GPU: HIS 1GB ATI Radeon HD4890
Case: Lian Li Lancool PC-K62
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 500W
Optical Drive: Sony-NEC Optiarc AD-7240S (24x)

And a monitor? I have a feeling that this is an expensive rig. What about changing out the i7 for an i5? Would that soften the blow a bit? Should I add a second graphics card??? What monitor would you get?

You're looking at 700,000 for i7 CPU and Mobo alone.

I'd get a 6GB kit of DDR3, around 200,000 on average.

The HD4890 is about to be obsolete. The ATI HD5870 is out now at 500,000 and it absolutely kicks ass....the fastest single GPU in the world..........but if you can't stretch to 500,000 then it's little brother, the HD5850, will be out next month for around the same price as the HD4890......maybe 300,000-ish........... Wait for the 5850.....much better than 4890.

Your other choices are fine but Lian-li, Antec and Sony are all imported and therefor not good value in Korea. There are good Korean brands for PSU, case and drives.

HDD? 2x1TB Samsung drives will be another 200,000. I've gone off WD. One of theirs has just failed on me recently.

Monitor? With the rig you're building, you'll be wasting it's power with anything less than a 24'' widescreen. 350,000 +.....

I recently got the LG M2794D for 500,000............ 27''.....2ms response time.....400cd contrast ratio. Really happy with it.

In total, for an i7 rig, without monitor, around 1.5 mill minimum.

It would be an absolute powerhouse though.

Eamo,

Thanks a lot for your lengthy, detailed, and mercifully straight forward response. Plenty of food for thought.

Would you only go with an i7 at the minute? Are AMD chips worth a go? What about the i5?

Sorry to ask inane questions...just trying to understand what is what! I got the specs list from an Australian website...which is why the components weren't Korean...but that was something I hadn't thought of.

Thanks a lot though...I really appreciate you talking the time to give such a decent answer.

Well, as you know, the i7 is the numero uno......the 920 version is 350,000 and can be overclocked very easily. Worth it if you OC it a bit.

O.K...so it appears that the keeper of the cash (otherwise known as the other half) has decided that 2 mill is a wee bit more than should be spent on a computer right now!!

In lieu of a trial separation I have decided to approach the computer from another angle and see what I can get it down to and still have a decent system...a sort of maximum bang for minimum bucks type scenario. So...anyone care to fill in the blanks with prices and decent brands? I haven't had much luck looking on Daum and Naver

Maybe...CPU: Intel Core i5 750 (230,000)
Motherboard: ??
RAM: 6GB kit of DDR3 (200,000)
GPU: ATI HD5850 (300,000)
Case: ???
PSU: ???
Optical Drive: ???
HDD: Samsung 1TB x 2 (200,000)
Monitor: LG M2794D (500,000)
Mouse: ???
Keyboard:???
Speakers:???

So...I'm already at around 1.2. It's a bit of a worry, considering there's still no case...no psu...no motherboard *sigh*.

How much will they charge to put it all together? Would I be better off doing it myself (I have old school experience building PC's...REALLY old school)?

Thanks for the help so far...now I just need to know where we can skimp to save a few bucks and still have a kick arse machine!!

Oh...and I'll need an OS!!! Which one???

Oh...and office!!! bugger me dead.

Quandry.

Mobo will set you back around 300...gotta love the i series. Cases are cheap...40~50 max. You need good power and at least 500watts of it...say, 70 to 100? ODD..maybe 35 or 40.

LG monitors kinda suck, IMO.

Mouse can run from the Hello Kitty Glowing Funtime at 7,000 to the made from unicorn horn 100,000 model. I use a Logitech MX 518...50,000.

Keyboard is much the same as a mouse...you can go 10,000 or 100,000. Just choose one when you go after you make a general max price. Say 50,000...all wired. Wireless may be more...?

OS? Windows 7 is on sale at BTJunkie, as is Office. Wink

Speakers...dunno...I use Sennheiser (sp?) phones.

You could consider ditching the i7/i5 range altogether.

It's possible to make a plenty fast PC with a P45 mobo and 775 CPU. That will bring the mobo+CPU cost down to 350,000.

Add,

4GB 800mhz RAM..........120,000
HD5850.........................300,000
2x1TB HDD....................200,000
Quality PSU...................100,000
DVD drive......................40,000
Case + fans....................60,000

well, actually, that's around 1.1 - 1.2 mill for a rig that doesn't have much of an upgrade path......

.........I'd bite the bullet and go i7!!

I know that's what I'm planning to do when I next get the clearance from my wife, eh, I mean personal accountant!!

If you show her how an i7 rig will give you a future-proof base which will only need bits and pieces upgraded over the next five years.......she might go for it.

Windows 7 is a no-brainer. Like Demo says, it's on sale now for $0.00 at many torrent sites! Same with Office.

Just thought I'd add:

I picked up an ATX midtower case from Gmarket for like 18,000w. Bought a 500watt power supply for around 30,000. Don't buy brand name RAM like Corsair XMS, Kingston HyperX or any of the other crap. You spend a premium on the ram to get what, 1-2FPS in optimal conditions?

A 24" widescreen monitor is a must. Just go and buy a cheap Samsung keyboard for 10,000. I got the orignal Microsoft Intellimouse optical (5 button) for like 10,000w at technomart. Its the best mouse ever.

The bulk of your money should go to the main components (CPU, Vid card, mobo).

The Logitech MX518 mouse is a thing of beauty for its price. I got my first one in Canada 50% off and loved it. I left it there for my wife to use when I came to Korea in the summer and I couldn't live without one, so I went and bought another one. Now I have two in the house Smile My wife likes the crap pad on her notebook, but I can't live without my godly mouse Smile

Not a chance....we gotta get some new yarns.

I see the makings of another get-together (support/therapy?) group:

Technophiles who married strict accountants.

Laughing

Ah well...when I retire early from her work, I will be happy.
