HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The kids took 50 minutes to do half of it. I wrote three stories in my journal. One kid started crying. Nobody earned a talent sticker. That was the best middle school class in 7 months. Laughing

Middle school? Those are early elementary questions. "Long nose?" Give me a break.

Its really important not to equate 2nd-language ability with sophistication of thinking. Small wonder so many of these kids think english is stupid & treat their teachers with contempt.

You're being harsh on the OP. What would they learn?!?!? Gesh! I'd hate to be your student if that's the way you think! If you have experience in teaching ESL/English, this activity is a learning tool. Learning should be fun. An activity for 15 minutes. Depending on what level one is teaching, I see nothing wrong with it. And I'll bet that the majority of teachers would also use it. So there....

The OP went on to admit, quite gleefully, that he uses such exercises to kill time. There are many ways to have fun in the classroom & some are assuredly more useful than others.

Puzzles have their place & students need occasional down time in a class. Agreed. But how do wordfinds help with phonics? Enlighten me.

I hate to say it Schwa, but you're not gonna win against those two. You are an educator; they obviously are not. You take your job seriously; they do not. No point in discussing it any further with them Rolling Eyes

HAhAH...I knew this would rattle some bones. The truth is I don't care about the middle school kids. I teach them once a week and because the Korean teacher has no control over them, they have become bleepheads. They refuse to speak English and they act like idiots. Therefore, if I can kill the time and keep them quiet and make them cry, I feel better.

Thank God for Word Search Puzzles!

I was hired to teach little kids. I love little kids, especially in this school. I never complain about them, at least not seriously.

Then as usual I got duped into teaching Middle School and then an adult class. I hate these classes. But what can I say? I just have to do it. I have every right not to like it.

Your laughing??? This is funny?? Giving middle school kids such rubbish is a joke? No wonder you didn't take the university position......you can't slack too much there. You are the epitomy of lazy, bad rep, english teacher. You've bragged on here about slacking, and here you go again.

What a waste of time and money.

pathetic.

No one is going advocate using puzzles to waste time...but don't that is not to say they don't have a place in the classroom. Not for phonics of course...that is just silly...

but they can reinforce vocabulary lessons...

they are pretty good at getting students to use lateral eye movements to take in more of the text....which benefits them in reading afterwards

they are good motivational tools...completion of word searches make the students feel good about their learning...a sense of accomplishment or ownership of the target vocab is healthy...

they are good for students who finish their work early...if you don't have other activities at hand to keep them busy...

if your students like them..then they can be used as a reward..

educators....would not dismiss them so easily if they really thought about it
