I hadn't thought of this. There has been way less pink eye than last year. Fully 40% of the kids in some of my classes had it last year.

A very common ailment in Korean summers and falls is pinkeye (conjunctivitis), and the problem had been getting much worse in the past two years. My Korean co-author tells me, however, that the H1N1 virus has created a positive externality in Korea.
These days, people are encouraged to wash their hands more frequently, and they appear to be doing it. That has sharply reduced cases of pinkeye. On net, I imagine that the economic costs of the swine-flu epidemic exceed the costs of the pinkeye outbreak. Nonetheless, its always nice to note the silver lining in an otherwise dark cloud. I wonder how many other examples there are of positive externalities arising out of negative shocks. |

| The proliferation of hand sanitizer is a good thing as well. I used to think I was the only person within 10km with Purell and now it's everywhere. |

Its all part of Purell's conspiracy to sell more hand sanitizer.
Can you people not see what is right in front of you? |

| Well here it's the generic alcohol cleanser. Better than the soap floating in gross, brown water. Or soap on a stick in a washroom that reeks of something... |

| I love the fact that most of the buildings I go in have some type of sanitizer in the lobby. |

| I love the fact that they're finally letting sick kids (at least the ones with Swine Flu) stay home for a change. |

I'm a big fan of that too. There's one in the lobby of the building I work in, and I'm an avid user. |

I remember reading an article from back home about how washing your hands (in soap with hot water) is much more effective than using hand sanitizers. It was something similar to soap and water actually getting the germs off your hands while the sanitizer kills most of them and leaves the rest. Anyway, the moral of the story was to wash your hands as you've always done but add the sanitizers in addition. I guess this is what most sane persons would do, but just a warning to anyone who uses it instead of washing. |

| Yeah I was just thinking today about how I love the fact that they introduced alcohol dispensers in our cafeteria at work where we line up for our food. Before, no one washed their hands, just went straight from keyboard to chopsticks/spoon. I don't give a rip about swine flu, but now I'm that much less likely to get diarrhea from my lunch. |

| Airline tickets are dirt cheap these days. Travel agents are desperate to get rid of tickets and no one seems to be buying them. |

The office finally put soap in the bathrooms!
If things like soap and basic hygiene is finally being covered, wouldn't that say something about this country's position as "developing" or "recently developed." |

| People are also finally learning to cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough. Well, at least some of them are. |

I couldn't get the thumbs up to do a 'bob for apples' activity for my elem PS Halloween party due to risk of H1N1 contamination.
That's a negative about swine flu.

| The hand sanitizer here is horrible, I feel like I'm rubbing my hands with Soju. |
