my principal's idea. (OMG SOSHULIS T INDOCTRINATE LULZ)
this school's english level is fairly low. not quite sure how to go about this, other than letting them listen while they fill in the blank on a worksheet.
any ideas? |

What are the levels like? Do you ahve more advanced classes?
For lower levels take small portions of the speech in video and see if they can listen for tone. does he sound serious? playful? Teach emotion words and then do a crossword to stick it in their heads. They might not get it right but perhaps they'll begin to think about it.
For upper levels you can use a transcript with blanks (gap-fills) and see if the students can recognize the missing words. Have a comprehension exercise that lets them digest the gist of the speech segment, do they get it? Cut up the speech and see if students in groups can rebuild the correct order of the transcript.
For very advanced students, let them write as much as they can of the speech (small portions) by listening. Then do a jigsaw and see if they can recompose more of the speech using what parts they were able to write down. |

thanks. i might try that.
although, there's not really a variety of emotions going on. just the trademark hopefull-gazing-into-the-future number. |

if they are very low level, i would just do a small part of the speech.
(if you have some really ambitious high levels, give them a copy of the speech afterclass - if you think they'll bother, you can ask them to look up the words they don't know or something for homework)
this is a great part because it emphasizes the importance of failure, something korean students are terrified of.

i would preteach the words/phrases:
'click with'
relevant
rejected
define
is being successful hard or easy?
how many times was harry potter rejected?
what happened to michael jordan in high school?
you can't let your failures define you, you have to let your failures do what?
questions for discussion:
who is afraid of failure?
what failures have you had in school or with your family?
why is being successful hard?
what would you do if you failed at something? how would you feel?
play the video a few times and make sure to pause it in between and ask the questions directly after he says the answer.
that should be a full 40-50 minutes. good luck! |
