My old next door neighbour/colleague decided to go and teach in China last August. He's now working at a Chinese university and he hates it there, but I digress.
There are a couple of stray dogs who always run around his campus together (I think you can see what's coming...)
Anyway, the other day, he noticed two builders had got hold of one of them and bought them to a big sink right below his apartment window. They proceeded to bash the head of the dog in (they did this for about ten minutes.) they then cut its throat. He said they took about ten minutes to kill the poor blighter and he's pretty upset, said he hasn't slept properly for the last four days and can't get it out of his head. (he's not one of those weepy veggie types, just a normal guy, and it's affected him really badly.)
Jesus, even hearing the story made me shudder, especially when he told me that he knew the dog as he always saw him and another dog running around together; I think that would affect me.
So, when you think things are brutal here, just be glad you're not in China. |

He watched them batter the dog for 10 minutes and he didn't do anything about it? |

Still a better death than being packed into a wire cage with so many other dogs that the wire cuts through paws and fur. No food, no water.
Then, removed, strung up by the neck, beat with metal poles, and have fur and skin burned off with blowtorches until dead. |

Here we go - another noob who hasn't left the UK telling us what he would have done about it - you would have done the same as that guy - nothing! And then if you would have piped up - everybody would have laughed at you for being such a softy.
I worked in Korea for two years and I am now in China - the only thing inferior about China in my own opinion is the money (and of course I miss my mates - some of the best mates I have ever had were made in Korea) but everything else is far better including the way Chinese people treat you! Just goes to show what tossers a lot of the Koreans we work with really are.
I'm sorry your mate is having a crap time of it though kebabman - I really like it here in China! Horses for courses and it is only a blinkered fool who thinks the Koreans treat animals well! |

I had a female friend in college who went on a trip to China. She walked through a market and saw someone pick up a live rabbit by its ears and dunk it in a pot of boiling oil until it was cooked. She went home soon after...
I went to a sea lion and dolphin show once in Jeju. Odd thing happened. The dolphins went on strike halfway through the show! Apparently the building had changed management and the dolphins were angry with how they were kept, and they refused to perform or leave the tank. The staff battered the water with poles but the dolphins wouldn't budge until they'd made their point. Lucky thing the dolphins didn't need E-2 visas.
I saw a few poorly treated horses in Jeju. The tradition the island has for training horses doesn't necessarily mean people are kind to them. |

The other day I ordered something off a menu at a Korean restaurant unsure of what it was (can't read the menus perfectly yet). Got the food, started eating the meat and it didn't have a distinguishing taste or look to it... Then it hit me... oh my god this might be dog. Oh my god this is definitely dog. That's it, I'm eating dog. I can't believe I'm eating dog. I love dogs. Oh my god, I'm friggin dog eater.
My hand quivered with guilt as I continued to shovel spicy red Clifford into my mouth (what, I'm gonna leave a full plate of food?)...
I got home, looked up the word in the dictionary -- chicken...

You think Koreans would treat the rabbits any better if A) Koreans liked rabbit or B) some Korean, some time in the distant past, while drunk said that rabbits are good for "stamina?" |

With the wages the builders are paid in china, I would think he would have more stomach for what happened. A free lunch is after all a free lunch. Granted they could have killed the canine quicker..... |

At Beijing Zoo I was flabbergasted to see some Chinese twit throw a bottle at a Panda in its enclosure. He wanted to make it move (as it was just sitting doing nothing.)
I lambasted his miserable face with expletives for must've been about 5 minutes before he slunk away in shock.
I mean what kind of complete idiot throws a bottle at one of the worlds most threatened species, which is the pride and symbol of his country???

Oh he's having a crap time because he's in a Wanzhou and says theres absolutely nothing to do, no nightlife, shit transport and he's just bored out of his mind. If he was in shanghai or Beijing I'm sure he'd feel differently.
I know they treat animals like crap in Korea as well, but I don't think that sort of sight would be a regular occurrence in Korea. Just saying, it's all relative really. |
