I've got about 3 months left on my contract, and this is my first year in korea. I'd like to stay, but i'm having difficulty deciding whether I should stay at the same hagwon, or change location. The problem is I don't have another hagwon to compare it to, although from the stories i've heard I'm probably at one of the better ones. My boss gives me quite a lot of freedom, and treats everyone pretty well.
Only downer is i'm Inchon, after looking around I can see why its called the 'armpit', and part of the perk of esl is being able to move around a lot.
anyway, for the long-termers, what is your approach to this, just beep it and move on to something else each year? |

This is probably not the right part of the forum to post this to. But anyway, if you are relatively happy in your job, consider yourself blessed in Korea. And if you do want to look at a different job, you have the luxury of being choosy.
I'm not familiar with Inchon. I'm not always sure Seoul is a lot better. To me an advantage of ESL is being able to travel a lot on holidays or weekends, and you still have that.

Seconded. If they treat you like an educator and not a performing monkey and haven't tried to screw you over on pay then you are indeed a fortunate soul. If your goal is staying in Korea then I'd reup were I you. |

Personally (and I've been screwed before by bad schools) I'd still take the chance to find a new place to work. Just be darn picky. Perhaps you don't have much time left before you have to commit to renewing, but if you decide to go elsewhere -- go for it.
Your school might be great, but if you hate your area, take a hard look at that. What other areas would you like to live in? I wanted to live in Itaewon after last year. I did, and enjoyed it, but had to move recently because of a new job.
Your time in Korea is, probably, short. If it's about "experience" and "enjoyment", rather than slaving away to pay off student loans, then follow your heart and move around.
Just my 2 cents. |

some good points. stability vs adventure. its the latter that got me in korea in the first place so i'm wondering whether i'm letting things slide on the excitement factor if i stay in inchon. inchon's not bad, but i know there are better places. i am happy at my school, despite the odd late salary payment. i guess i could always leave anytime in the 2nd year contract, so i might stick out a few more months and see how that goes. thanks for the feedback. |

Blake, I'm in the exact same boat. My situation mirrors yours exactly. Things are pretty easy and my boss aint that bad at all, yet I'm feeling like I'd really like a change of scenery. My contract's up in 2 months. I don't know, I'll test the water and if something really good comes up, I'll make a move. |

Knowing that there are plenty of bad situations out there, it may be a case of you're on a good thing stick with it. A change can be a good thing, but be very selective and ensure that it is all it should be, if you decide to change schools. Look at the positive aspects and compare them with a move and see which seems better. The decision ultimately is yours. Good luck either way, personally I'd stay another year. |
