On the 15th, Shinwha vocalist, Shin Hye-sung, has been charged for habitual overseas gambling. According to Judge Jang of the International Criminal Court in Incheon, Shin Hye-sung has been charged without physical detention and sentenced to a fine of 10,000,000 KRW for his habitual overseas gambling. |
I know the same thing happened to the Korean women who did porn in the West (almond tease), but I thought Koreans were allowed to gamble in those small casinos in the suburbs. |

Koreans aren't allowed to break Korean law no matter where they are.
It's against the law for Koreans to gamble anywhere, including Vegas.
It's against the law for Koreans to make porn.
It's against the law for Koreans to smoke pot, even in Amsterdam.
It's against the law for Korean (women) to have sex outside of marriage.
I'm sure there are more, that's just all I can come up with now.
It's a progressive society in terms of technology and achievement but constantly looking backwards, given that situation, they're going to walk into walls every now and then.
Don't try to change it. Don't try to understand it. Just accept it and thank whatever god you pray to that you're not part of it. |

Ridiculous. This is just one of the things that happen if you have a retarded federal government with too much power.

I thought Koreans were allowed to gamble in those non-foreigner casinos. I thought there is a casino down in suwon that was for Koreans, isn't there? |

Ah, the problem with your statement... males are allowed to get away with anything. |

Wow, is this true?
How ridiculous.
ETA:
Okay I just asked my co-teacher about it, and she said it's true. She agrees with me that the laws of your country should not apply if you're out of your home country.
However, she told me that she thinks celebrities should be held to a higher standard. She also started to talk about the Korean bloodline and how they are "very conservative" in that area, so they don't gamble or do drugs.
She also brought up the story of the man who raped and tortured that poor little girl and got 12 years for it. She said most Korean people she knew could not for the life of them understand how he could admit to being drunk and then get a lower sentence. |

Do you even know anything about the law here? The way people here try to bash Korea and its custom, culture and the law without any basic knowledge about it is truly laughable. But yet here I am getting myself invovled...I must go out more.

The truth is he has violated the Foreign Exchange Control Law.
The article clearly states he's gambled an estimated 142,000,000 KRW. that's approx. 140,000 USD.
Now if you have seen the movie Jackie Brown, you know it's illegal to transfer that much amount of money oversea without paying tax.
He's arrested cuz he'd transferred the dough thru an illegal broker, not for gambling.
No Korean gets arrested only for gambling overseas, that much I can guarantee you. And believe me, no Korean gets arrested for smoking a pot in Holland if he can prove his self in the land of the morning calm had nothing to do with it.
There was some semi-celeb dude (Jee-Chang Son) who hit the jackpot in Las Vegas and nobody had made any fuss about it, why? cuz he'd only spent the amount he was supposed to spend; 10,000 USD.
Now, the apologist will go out. |

I don't doubt you. But according to the article, he was in trouble for habitual gambling. It makes no mention of illegal brokers, which is why I'm confused. I'm pretty sure there are Korean casinos outside of Seoul. I could be wrong, but my k-co-worker insisted that they existed. |

Just a note, the same applies for US Citizens. We are "required" to abide by US laws no matter where we are unless of course it contradicts the laws of the host country.
When I was in Italy for a study abroad program, a lady from the American embassy came by to remind us to behave as if we were back home, explicitly telling us we are not allowed to smoke marijuana in Amsterdam.
I'm pretty sure the same applies for most countries. Problem with Korea are their crazy conservative convoluted laws. A Korean adult having a completely consensual threesome with two other adult Americans in the USA could be arrested when arriving back into Korea. |

yeah, i get you man. the article sure was misleading. this country is effed in all sorts of aspects no wonder you wondered.
btw, there are a bunch of casinos, racing tracks in korea, some serious amount of ppl are addicted to it they even pay their 'customers' (for their trip back home) if they sign a piece of paper that they'd never step in the casino again. (i believe the amount was some w10000). now this is conditional jhung at its best.
a korean movie called 'my dear enemy' depicts a scene at a horse racing track in the begining, check it out if you ever get a chance.
(bwt, almond tease had no problem with the local law and will never have one unless she posts one of her videos on a korean site) |

There is only one casino for Koreans in Korea that I know of. It is in Gangwando. I went there over a year ago. Everyone had to show ID to get in. This seemed to be for the purpose of verifying one's age as anyone could play there, regardless of nationality. Koreans had to pay 10,000 Won to enter, it was free for foreigners.
No drinking of alcohol allowed. There was free soda available.
It was packed with habitual gamblers.
The atmosphere was not light. It was somber and depressing. Smoky too, of course.
My friend and I were the only two non-Asians there. The line to get in was long and there was the usual grumbling. One man in line spoke to us about having to pay. He was Korean but had a different nationality. They give him a little bit of a hard time. He said he had gambled in Japan and it was more enjoyable.
By this I am guessing he meant there was less stigma attached to it.
I only saw one couple enjoying themselves - a young couple. My friend overheard them say, "Let's take out another 200,000" with the other agreeing enthusiastically.
My Korean friend wanted to try it out and had pre-limited himself to 50,000 Won. We couldn't even get on any of the machines. People were either playing them or had reserved or jammed the machine to have it run automatically while they went to relieve themselves or stock up on tokens.
He doesn't play cards much, and anyway those tables were full as well. After less than an hour, we gave up and left. When I say we, I mean him, as my other friend and I weren't interested. Personally, I despise gambling.
While waiting for a taxi outside, a woman began speaking to us. My friend interpreted. She had been going there to gamble since it had opened. She used to commute from Seoul every weekend. Eventually she just moved to the town and now gambles there almost every day. She didn't have good luck that day.
While looking for some food, we saw quite a few pawn shops. Most of the cases were filled with watches. My K friend had a look but didn't like what was on display. The prices didn't seem a bargain to me.
The town itself was your typical blight on the landscape.
The only thing that surprised me was that I wasn't surprised by anything that I saw.
To my great relief, we went back to the hotel. The next morning we went to a river nearby and went fishing and swimming.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. |

I like that the Korean government recognizes that people don't have free will. As Huxley et al pointed out, we only act because of how we are hardwired and genetically composed. We make choices, but why do we make those choices?
Koreans are Korean through and through and they must be Korean wherever they go. I'm glad the west is catching up by punishing sex offenders who commit their heinous crimes abroad.
You are your nationality and you represent your country and/or race wherever you go. Your government is liable for itself, and the behavior of its citizens at home and abroad are a product of government and cultural upbringing. Remember, in this day and age, you are your government and representative governments operate with checks and balances. As a piece of property, you must be checked, balanced, and corrected. |

I thought he was talking about adultery at first. Premarital sex isn't illegal. I refuse to believe my government is that totalitarian.

Can't wait for the day when we get to have awesome microchips embedded in our skin so our benevolent governments can make sure we are safe. Sure we may feel like dogs, but being a pet ain't so bad. You get fed, sheltered, and when you act up, somebody has the decency to punish you. |

That's a pretty interesting quote. Is it yours or did you get it somewhere?
