I have an Intel imac running leopard. I need an external hard drive. Can anybody recommend a good one. I don't need the newest, fastest thing out there, just something that works well and is a good value.
Thanks |

For value for money, you can't beat Yongsan. Just go there and choose the size that you want, the brand that you want and the enclosure that you want. I've been running my intel Macbooks with two 750 gig Samsung externals (I keep my itunes and iPhoto on an external because I hot swap between the two laptops as need be) that I got from Yongsan quite some time ago...and never had any dramas.

Do you guys use firewire or USB? Do you notice much of a difference.
Burndog,
I also want to move itunes and iphoto to the external drive. Is it slow, for example, to upload pictures to Facebook from the external drive...or to open a picture from the external drive in, say, Photoshop?
I'll be buying it from Danawa...the online site for Yongsan.
Giraffe,
Thanks for the recommendation...I'll see what's on offer at Danawa. |

It's not slow for iTunes or iPhoto or even iMovie...BUT...I don't use photoshop. I imagine (having used it in a past life) that it could slow things down a bit. I'm not the most technical fellow though, so can't recommend too much. Hopefully someone who has used Photoshop with the photos on an external will reply.
My drives are USB 2.0. It's difficult to get Firewire drives in Korea (maybe Frisbee (the Apple store in Myeongdong) will have some). |

I'd stick to WD for anything hard drives related. |

I got a Buffalo, though I think they just make enclosures, using other companies drives. No complaints |

I also have a Buffalo...not had it long, only a few months, but no problems whatsoever. It's my first external hard drive though, so can't really compare it to anything. |

I see, according to the chart....
firewire 400 = slowest
USB 2.0 = a bit better
firewire 800 = faster
e-sata = fastest
Faster + more options = more expensive
So, if I'm just going to use a USB to send pictures, music, etc. over to the external drive, the cheaper one that only has USB will probably be fine--I'm not going to be editing movies housed on the external drive or anything! (and my computer doesn't even have a e-sata port!!) |

I have a "Zhan" 320GB external USB/E-SATA combo. Its a 2.5" (notebook) drive, a Western Digital drive inside the housing. At 120,000, its a good deal. However, if it were not for portable use, I would have gotten a 3.5 USB/E-SATA setup.♦ If you have a MAC, just go firewire.♦ |

That's exactly what I was thinking. Not because firewire has any advantages, but because iMac computers only have one spare USB slot, assuming one has a printer. That means in order to plug in both my camera and my external hard drive I would have to unplug my printer--lame!!!
Look at my earlier post, though. a 640GB WD drive with usb only costs 124,000 Won. To get the same 640 GB drive with firewire costs 245,000 Won. So, I would pay over a hundred thousand more just to get the pleasure of using a SLOWER connection (firewire being 400 mbs and usb 2 being 480).
I think I'm just going to go with the above mentioned 1TB WD drive for 143,000. |

can't you use one of these (usb hub) with a mac
http://www.techsolution.co.za/catalog/images/4_Port_USB_Hub.jpg
I have four external harddrives, camera, skype phone, headphones, webcam all running through my computer with a couple of spares for thumb drives.
anyway that link you posted has firewire 800 not 400, which is faster than usb 2 (and it is meant to be a lot faster with large files?) |

I'd recommend going for a 2.5 USB HDD (laptop size) simply for the convenience. They're smaller, lighter, and don't require an additional power supply - they get their juice from the USB connection. I got a 500GB for 120,000 at Yongsan 2 months ago. |
