So anyone got any idea's of good ways to start a new school on your first day. Teaching level is Kinder and Elementary. Obviously you can't just stroll in and say 'Hello everyone, how are you?". Im sure they will just stare.

So what do you do with kids who are 4 years and up????

Oh don't worry about your first day. That'll all take care of itself. It's your second week you should really be worried about.

What I did, was just tell them my name, what country I come from, & showed slides of animals, native to Australia. And photos of the major cities & tourist attractions. ie, this is Uluru, this is the Great Barrier Reef, this is the Sydney Opera House. You could also ask the students their names. Many schools have a book on the teachers desk, with all the students names & photos. Copy it, & match up the students with the photos (often with completely different hair styles & colour, so it can be tricky). I don't know if this would work for kindy though?

Thanks guys,

I think it's a little scary, you know, tiny people. Im used to my niece now, she's 1 and i feel im not terrified of her because she just blow me raspberry's, leaves me munched up food in my shoes and shes family. When it comes to 10 little monsters i get scared of what to do with them until i get into the grove of things.

Im excited however, i really want to be able to teach them something. My mothers been a primary teacher for over 30 years. When im in her class i just chat to the kids (8/9/10yr olds). We talk about everything because they speak english.....i think the main fear is these kids speak no english and will just stare at me like im an alien.

It will be fine. Thanks for the info. I may use the showing them my home country routine.....

Anymore advice, keep it coming!!!

Thanks everyone

Kindy kids can never get enough "Head Shoulders Knees and Toes"... It's like crack or something.

Mix it up, go fast, go slow, do long pauses.... They'll love you and and they'll listen.

Don't get your hopes up too much. You're just there to make someone money and keep the mommies happy.

In elementary, I made them guess my name, age, where I was from and as many personal details as I could think of, then split them up into two teams and did a powerpoint quiz to see which team could remember the most about me. It went down quite well. Don't worry about your first day.
