Hey guys,

Was scanning through the posts on this forum and I noticed one guy mention he was thinking about doing a lesson plan on Konglish. Seems like an ok idea, but is the term Konglish not offensive or patronizing? I won't be offending my co-teachers if I tell them that next weeks lesson plan is going to be on common Konglish will I?

Thanks for any opinions,
Mike

It's not offensive.

It does sound offensive to the ear, but it's like the word spanglish (spanish and english)

A lot of Koreans claim their own English ability is Konglish.

Actually I think Koreans use the term more often than native speakers. Just an observation.

Nope, not at all.

Konglish most correctly describes English loanwords in Korean that have been altered in some way so that their Konglish use is not understood by English speakers.

Other people use the term for any common mistake in English by Korean speakers. It's not really the pure definition, but it works.

Regardless, either of these lessons would be useful.

I'll sometimes do a lesson on Konglish the first day of class, and it always goes well; enlightening and informative for the students, entertaining for me, and no one gets offended.

I'll usually give a list of Konglish words and have them try to figure out in groups what the real English term is or the difference in the Konglish versus English use. Also I'll have them think of more words (challenging but they do a good job of it once momentum builds).

Doing the group work on the first day makes them get acquainted and comfortable without realizing they're doing so. The last 15 minuts or so of class I'll lecture, going over all the words, giving example sentences, and giving them more Konglish words they may have missed.

I really recommend doing a Konglish lesson.
