I will be leaving for Busan next month, and I know very little about the cell phone services in Korea. Do I need a plan tor is it best to just buy minutes whenever I need them? Maybe it isn't even possible to text back home, I don't know. I'm just curious.

I pay about $60 USD per month (about 72,000 won) here and that includes unlimited texting.

Should I expect to pay more or less than that in Korea?

You will pay way less than that. It's getting easier to get a plan here, now. People complaining about being turned down for a contract used to be a big thing on this forum, but you hardly ever hear it now. Get your co-teach to help you sort it out.

Skype works great for texting home, but your buddy can't reply. I haven't tried to text home using my Korean phone. It would work if you had global roaming enabled but would probably cost a lot.

I send texts all the time to the US/England/Australia from my Korean phone, granted can't get replies from Aus but can get replies from UK/US. It hardly costs anything, between 4-6won per months for about 20-40 texts a month

Can you tell us what company you are using and which plan? Thanks.

i'm signed up with LG on a contract. In the UK my dad uses orange and we can text each other no problem, i just put 00700 before the 44 then drop the first 0 of his phone number. You have to be careful with the UK networks, my mum is on Onetel and she can recieve my texts but can't reply to them, Orange is the only uk network i have found to work.

As for the US i just to the same and drop the first 0 and it seems to work, not sure what provider my friends in the US are using.
