Tomorrow is the Remembrance Day.
I'll be keeping a minute of silence at 11 AM.
Lest We Forget. |

'Insensitive' is a gross understatement. What 'Man Haron Monis' (Sheikh Haron) did, is criminal. There are other, legal ways to protest. Rudd is talking about revoking his citizenship, & deporting him. Every major tabloid in Australia is reporting this story, btw, not just the 'Hun'. (Herald Sun). 'Man Haron Monis' also said that the Aussies who died in the Bali bombings, & in the Victorian bushfires, deserved what they got, as it was 'God's punishment'. Echoing the sentiments of convicted terrorists plotting the Holsworthy Army Base Attack.
If you read the comments in that 1st link, there are several immigrants who strongly agree, that Man Haron Monis is clearly in the wrong, & most ungrateful for his priveleged Australian citizenship. eg:

"Comment 156 of 164: Eduardo Amaya of Melbourne Posted at 3:05 PM October 22, 2009... I migrated to Australia at a very young age....civil war in El Salvador was the main reason. We were extremely lucky to be given another chance by this lovely country and its people. No one makes any one migrate, it is the individuals choice - bar children (but parents have a right to know what is best). Migrants have a responsibility to live by this countries standards - if you don't agree then you have a choice to go somewhere else. Australians don't want people who will cause problems, we (Yes - I think I'm an Australian now) want people to strive for a fair go and peaceful way of life - arab, latino or asian - we are all humans wanting long term peace not the hate this man is preaching. Go back to Iran, we want peace in this great nation." |
He (Sheikh Haron) is not even a qualified theologian, but is masquerading as a cleric. Do we really need a terrorist attack on home soil, or another Fort Hood (Holsworthy Base came very close), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7hdf_HBivU before Immigration toughen up entry requirements for immigrants? 'Benbrika' was an illegal Algerian immigrant, who overstayed his visa, & was plotting to blow up the Crown Casino &/or the MCG. Was he deported? No.

Maybe I underestimated this crackpot.
I was agreeing with him for protesting about being in Afghanistan, making Oz a less safe place and I was taking into consideration his background and culture, whereby considering peoples' feelings is possibly not taken into account.
Reading some of those comments by HeraldSun readers really made me shudder though, and I don't trust tabloid journalism. Time and time again I've been duped by them taking things out of context, using sound bites etc.
Fact is, when discussing this immigration debate, the PC crowd are all too fast to use the word racist so I back off these days, it's not even safe on the internet, even though I feel the silent majority are seething.
When something does eventually happen is Oz, I'd hate the see the backlash on immigrants who look different. |

Back in Oz, I lived in the al-qaida central of Oz: Lakemba.
I saw the change in attitude of middle eastern immigrants living there.
When they were the minority, there were docile.
When they began to take over the suburb, things began to change.
By the time I left, it was 'go away, you infidel. we're muslims.'
The 'Cronulla riots in 2005' would happen again if they carry on like that. |

Kurtz: I take your point re media bias. I was still at Uni, when the Cronulla riots broke. There was provocation by both sides, with the mix of alchohol, & Alan Jones & other shock jocks goading on the Anglo/Celtic Aussies, not helping. I'm not sure if Jones was ever charged for incitement, but he should have been. The above article from the Sydney 'Terrorgraph', makes Rudd's position clear.
Gregory Sher himself was an immigrant, so it would be wrong to lash out mindlessly at all immigrants. Or Muslims. Most of them take their citizenship oaths seriously.

It appears that some migrants have no real attachment to Australia beyond a residence of convenience. It appears that others may have had no real commitment to Australia or its values when they swore an oath of allegiance when receiving citizenship. |

From this time forward, under God*,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey.
*All new citizens have the choice of making the pledge with or without the words 'under God'. |
