So I applied and was just sent a job offer to teach with EPIK in Busan, but having read over the contract I do have some questions. Now I've forwarded them to my recruiting agency, but I know their interest is to fill up positions, and they have no liability once I'm actually hired, so excuse me if I also feel like I should ask here. =)
1) There is some very vague language in the contract. For example, it says that my employer "may require" that I work "non-instructional overtime hours in addition to normal work hours" for about $5/hr in Article 8 and in Article 3 it says that I may be asked to "perform other duties as designated by the employer". Doesn't this add-up to me being compelled to do whatever I'm asked to for $5/hr? Isn't this worrying? What sort of recourse do I have if this vague language is exploited once I'm there?
2) It says that my housing is paid for but "any and all fees, charges, costs, taxes [...] shall be borne" by me and "may include [...] a maintenance fee from the landlord" (Article 12). What sort of taxes or fees can I expect? What sort of maintenance fee would I have to pay?
They're also pressuring me and saying they need a yes/no response from me by today, so I appreciate any feedback you guys and gals may have. =) |

Don't worry about either. In 3 years in Korea I've never been required to work overtime by any of my public schools. I got selected by Epik to go to a training course for adult student Korean teachers, did the required 10,000 word manuscript, & was paid an extra 2 million, on top of my normal 2mill won a month. So I'm not complaining.
Maintenance fees can be anything from 30k a month up to & over 120k a month, depending on how good an officetel you get, & its location. There are none of the 6 month lease fees of 700k to 900k that your school pays up front for you, to worry about. Other incidentals are gas, phone, cellphone, all around 12-20k won a month, more if you rack up long overseas calls. Gas & oil heating costs can escalate dramatically in winter months.

Well they called today and said that the start date has changed to Nov 2, from Dec 2. So I had to turn it down. Just like that... |
