| There is this teacher in an old school I used to work at who wants to get out now. The school stole my money (just a hundres thousand a month, nothing to write home about) and a month salary from another teacher. He wants to work in Thailand which is inadvisable for any number of reasons, but that is what he's doing, let what happen may. Point is, what are the legal ramifications for pulling a runner? |

Not me, I am in canada and home free. Problem is, they did pay for his plane ticket in, and he is only three months into his contract. contractually he needs to be paying that money back. Me, I could cheerfully see those guys suck lemons, but I don't want to tell him to do that unless I am clear he won't have international police tracking him down. For 2,000 dollars.... maybe this is paranoid? |

Dude, they're breaking his contract by stealing money from him. Even if they weren't and he wanted to do a runner, there would be no legal ramifications (it would just be unethical, but they couldn't do anything).
I don't see why your friend should pay back the flight ticket if they're cheating him. If he stays, chances are they will cheat him even more. I promise there are no legal ramifications, just tell him to get outta there and don't let his conscious bother him about not paying back the plane ticket. If it is bothering him, just tell him to pay back the plane ticket minus the amount of money they stole from him. |

There are no legal ramifications attached to 'pulling a runner' per say. However, should a judgment be obtained from a court of law for money owed, Immigration has a duty to arrest and detain... pending appearance before the court. Tell you friend this is something to think about if he/she ever wants to enter K-land again.
It is wise not to confuse two, separate legal issues. |

Do you think if an employer was blatantly taking 100,000 won out of every paycheck for no reason whatsoever, they would try to press charges on him for not paying back airfare? How could the employer answer for that?
Really, do you think the employer would throw a fuss?
OP - this is only an issue if your friend wanted to move back to Korea. But even then, I think the employer wouldn't try crap.
"Judge, besides the fact that I am a thief and have been stealing from this employee for months, they refused to repay the airfare! Ahh! Send him to prison!" 
How long was his employer taking money from him? If it were me, I'd take the amount of money the employer stole and deduct it from the plane ticket. Then pay the rest back. It probably wouldn't be that much (depending on how long employer's been stealing). That way your friend's conscious will feel better and the employer wouldn't have a lot to complain about.
