I have a 1 day open class schedule I have to prepare. Students are actually placed in one of 10 classes. The middle ones overlap, but I only need to worry about 5 of them. My co-teacher will do the other 5 the next day.

They are elementary school students from 1st-6th grade, with each class between 5-10 students. I will have 50 minutes, but I have no idea if this means 20 minutes will be spent talking to parents or if they are going sit for the whole 50 minutes.

First, has anyone done this before? What should I expect?
I am assuming activities like drawing and things involving writing might not be the best things to do since parents are probably going to want to hear their children speak. Is it treated more like a talent show or are parents actually interested in seeing the students do "school stuff"?

Use lots of Powerpoints. Lots of listen and repeat.

Song introduction, Powerpoint vocabulary and examples then a Powerpoint game of your choice. Preferably one where they practice the target vocab in sentences eg. BAAM or Jeopardy.

Wow, you guys really suggest powerpoint for parent day? Is that because they are focused on one thing (hopefully), or that you are giving a presentation?

I am being told to prepare the classes so they are more presentation style, rather than classroom drill oriented which is what I usually do.

Depends what section of the unit you`re on. They couldn`t possibly give a presentation for part 1, right?

Not sure what that means. It seems like you would want to do a presentation as part 1, then when the class understands the grammar, gets some vocabulary to work with, you turn off the powerpoint and then do activities. I would find it hard to do it the other way.

Maybe that's not what you meant.

You: cat cat cat Class: cat cat cat continue with all of the animals from a-z.

Then mime all of the animals and have the students guess which animal; really get into the part.

For example, act out a cat by screaming MEOW MEOW and scratch the air like your a cat.

Finally write ___ ___ t on the board and have stuents try and guess the missing letter. Do this for the full class and it will take up all your time and the kids will go crazy.

i'd teach the kids an easy song using powerpoint: go over new vocab in the song, include a fill-in-the-blank worksheet, have the kids sing a couple times, and play golden bell or another game in groups where you ask them comprehension questions about the vocab or song.

the powerpoint presentation will make you look organized to the parents, worksheets will look like the kids are actually paying attention, the singing will be the verbal skills, and the group work will show the kids having fun.

^ i'm not saying you should always 'teach' like this, but this is what the parents are expecting. it's a lot easier than dealing with their complaints afterwards.

Well, I still have my "1" time to do. So, if they complain they want something else than what I did then I'll just say sure I'll do it next time.
