I'm curious if there is a limit on the number of weeks an employer holds
back the first salary payment. I have just looked at a contract that reads
payday is on the 17th of each month. Since I would be starting on March
2nd, I'm not entitled to a full mont's pay until April 17, about six weeks
after starting. In Canada an employer cannot hold back pay over 30 days.
Is there anyone who may know if a time limit applies in Korea. I'd be glad
to know. Rolling Eyes

I don't know about holding back pay, but I do know that you are supposed to be paid by the tenth of the month, I believe thats one of the Korean labor laws. .

i get paid on the tenth of each month- and got my first cheque only 2 weeks after I began.
However, individual hagwons seem to make up their own rules on it.

How is it every job I have ever worked I am paid on the 20th? That is for that month too, so it is past the 10th.

Also I am not alone, a lot of companies pay on the 19th or 20th.

Pretty sure your work is screwing with ya...if you start march 2nd they should pay your march wage some time in march.

Thank god I dont have to put up with this crap anymore- the labor law says you must be paid once per 30 days. Its not "the labor suggestion", its the labor law. Working for more then 30 days and not getting paid is flat out illegal. This is how the hogwon masters maintain economic hold of their slaves. The law here is not unclear, or even open to interpretation. YOU MUST BE PAID ONCE PER 30 DAYS.

You guys could solve this quite easily if just one person looked up the law and pasted what it actually says in full detail.

A heap of thanks for all the quick replies.
I shall consider what you've informed me of
and discuss it with a Korea Labour Board official
on Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend! Very Happy

Here's the site for the Ministry of Labour and the Labour Standards Act.

http://www.molab.go.kr:8787/English/law/sub_1.jsp

It's located on page 3. It is file #10.

I can't seem to open it though on my system for some reason.

Cheers

Evil or Very Mad Well, what do you know!
I contacted the Korea Labor board, Labor Standards Division
and discovered that we're all being shafted with our pay:
our monthly salary should be paid in two instalments, twice a month.
As Koreans are, we should be paid twice a week.
It's time for a nation-wide walk out. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Embarassed
