As David Brooks notes, that area is education. I've read articles here and there on the Obama administration trying to reform education. I admire its efforts and even if it can only manage to reform the system a small little bit, I'll be happy. Yes, I am easily pleased, what can I say.

Duncan even seems to have made some progress in persuading the unions that they cant just stonewall, they have to get involved in the reform process. The American Federation of Teachers recently announced innovation grants for performance pay ideas. The New Haven school district has just completed a new teacher contract, with union support, that includes many of the best reform ideas. |
Anyway, I do think this is one area where the Obama administration has started off strongly in (other being FP, minus Afghanistan). And I think our lower education system definitely needs to improve, so I am excited at the prospect of our schools at least trying to improve.
Oh, and lastly it is supported by both sides of the political spectrum. Thank you GOP for having some sense and not blocking it simply because it is related to Obama:

Ive been deeply disturbed by a lot thats going on in Washington, Jeb Bush said on Thursday, but this is not one of them. President Obama has been supporting a reform secretary, and this is deserving of Republican support. Bushs sentiment is echoed across the spectrum, from Newt Gingrich to Al Sharpton. |

Education has been one of the areas where the govt has been least successful, over the last 30 years. School spending has exploded, while student achievement levels have stagnated or declined.

The best way to improve schools is to break up the govt monopoly. Distribute that funding to the students instead of the schools. And let the people who matter choose how that money will be spent, not the Teachers' union.
EDIT: Just want to add, Obama has a poor record on school choice. He canceled the voucher system in Washington, which was having good results, especially for poor black kids. |

The only change I've seen from Obama's presidency is that I've been nudged a little farther to the right. Well, that and the quadrupling of the US national debt. |
