I'm finishing my contract this week and heading home soon and I'm trying to find out about getting tax money back. I've looked at an old thread about it, but I couldn't find out exactly what I needed.

Can someone who has experience with getting the tax refund back give me some advice? I work at a hagwon (November 2008-09) and my boss says he has no idea about getting tax money back. I'm a US citizen...if that information is needed.

I looked on the website given in other threads and it looks like I'm due about 700,000 won, but I'm not sure how to go about getting that.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Call the tax help line (02-397-1440) to get instructions and then go to your district tax office and fill out the paperwork. Take a korean with you to translate. You can get summaries of what was filed/paid and any refunds that were released to your boss to give to you from 2008. The 2009 tax year doesnt end until Dec 31 and tax settlements are done in Jan/Feb.

You should have already received a tax settlement statement from 2008 and a refund from that, but your boss either didnt file for it and kept what he/she deducted from your salary or filed, but pocketed your refund. If it's the latter, you may have a fight on your hands to get that money from your boss.
