They were asking me to help them make English signs to put outside the doors of each room in the school about a year ago. I obliged and they followed through on most of them.

Today I noticed that they called the room for the mentally challenged students the "Retard Room." See, they asked me if they could call it that their cell phone or naver or whatever translated it that way. I told them "no" as most people would feel that it was politically incorrect.

Through some miscommunication or chain of events, or something... it got named "retard room" in the end.

Normal people would be pissed but I think its pretty funny.

Oddly enough, I think they should have separate rooms for the mentally challenged and the retards. I have a pretty good idea of who to put in the latter...

I think it is funny as well; their mistake, not the teacher's. He tried to stop them.

You too! I don't have to sort them out, but they are in my classes. I just don't understand what the Korean policy is for children who are severely challenged. The only thing I can think of is the families who can not afford the proper "school" for these children have to enroll them in a regular public school.

It's actually very sad. My co-teachers put these students in the back of the class.

My school has a full time helper for one of the challenged girls. The other two roam the halls, mostly. Rolling Eyes

It IS funny.

You obviously have no sense of humor... you shouldn't be teaching.

These teachers with teacher credentials... (We all know good teaching starts with credentials!)

This poster has a superiority complex. I'm too lazy to dig for the rest.

Just so happens, I have just the room for you! Very Happy

Funny scenario but I think sharing a photo around would be crass ("those stupid Koreans").

Its not a case of parents not being able to afford specialized care. Nicely equipped centers with trained staff exist & they're free to poor families. But in some cases theres a parental reluctance to commit to the idea their kid is different, in which case regular schools have to admit them.

The special ed teacher in my school takes extraordinary care of a handful of special needs students. They often fit quite seamlessly into my regular classes. Maybe they'd be better served in a dedicated institution, but on the other hand maybe not.

I also think its useful for regular students to be exposed to kids with differences. I see an inclination to be kind.

Ours is called "challenging room". Come to think of it maybe it's not such a compliment when my co-teacher says " your class is very challenging".

Ooh. Get her! my school has 3 full-time teachers for the 'special students'. Some of the kids attend classes with a helper present in the room, just in case they throw a wobbly or start taking their clothes off.
I think the parents want their kids to live a 'normal' life, and the other kids do pitch in and try to help them - which can only be good for their development.
