Definitely Sokcho, as already mentioned. Try to go this weekend to see Seoraksan's Autumn colours. I was there last weekend and it is spectacular!

Thanks......considering it now.

Is a weekend enough fpr that trip? Full day Saturday, leave Sunday mid afternoon?

Any recommendations for motels/love motels/hotels? and hiking trails? nothing too strenuous but that might be difficult considering it's Seoraksan Laughing

The House Hostel. Fantastic place. Search for it on Hostels.com or Hostelworld.com

If you're not into strenuous hiking, take the cable car to Gwonggeumsong Fortress. Then take a short walk to the Biryong waterfall. Ulsanbawi and Geumganggeul Cave are pretty cool, but there's quite a few stairs. In the evening, check out downtown and the jungang market.

Get up early on Sunday and watch the sunrise over the East Sea / Sea of Japan / whatever you like to call it. The hostel owner lets you leave your bags with him after you check out, so you can still spend some time hiking or hanging around before catching your bus back.

I stayed there after a recommendation from this site, maybe it was you? Anyway it was a great place, and so cheap. The owner is a great guy! It will be very very busy though. I took the 5.30am bus to Seoraksan on Sunday to do my hiking before the tens of thousands of other tourists arrived.

It can get very windy at the top of the mountains though...I was freezing at one of the peaks last weekend. A couple of t-shirts and a jacket should suffice though.

house hostel for sure, and like mentioned a jacket and you will be fine. depending on your schedule, try and take a bus out on friday night. i think the buses leave until pretty late, and its worth it to go friday evening. quick ride there, under three hours. on sunday make sure you go buy bus tickets in the morning so you can choose the time you want to head back. if you just show up at the bus station chances are the next bus with seats will be a couple hours later. easier to just buy them in the morning.

Sokcho is a pretty awesome area. I just went two weeks ago and the colors were amazing up in the mountains.

Don't skip out on Ulsanbalwi, its an awesome hike with lots of stairs up to an amazing view and a couple rocks you can climb out on.

When you go up, Don't forget to rub the head of the lion on the left side of the second bridge you pass as you go up the trail either, it's supposed to give you good health and luck. Don't do the lion on the right side though, rubbing his head will give you a female child.

I second Ulsanbawi, especially this time of year. Awesome views from the top.

I as well rubbed the lions head... I was told by the owner of the motel I was at to do it... Didn't know about the female thing. Damn good thing I did.
