My head teacher just informed me that I need to plan and execute a speech contest for the entire school. Has anyone else had to do this or something like this? How do you plan something like this? Any Ideas? Advice?

what level is this for? i'd suggest judging all the grades separately and announce winners in each grade: 1st, 2nd, 3rd. (it'll be more work for you, but a lot more fair for the kids).

i've judged speech contests before, but i've never been asked to organize one. from what i've seen, the kids are responsible for writing and memorizing an essay-type answer to a question and reciting it to you. you would have to come up with a different question for each grade level (appropriate to their level) and a minimum and maximum number of words for each grade level as well.

you'll have to talk to your co-teachers about how and when you'll call the kids out of class to participate.

You gotta tell us
what level: elementary, middle, high
How big is school? How many classes per grade/ how many students per class
Are there students who's spent time in English speaking nations?
They might have to be excluded.
Time limit: max 2 minute or so.
Will you allow notes?
Who will be judges?
Judge on:
sticking to theme
content
confidence
pronunciation
intonation
speed
audience control
eye focus

try to get all grades and all sexes represented,

They are middle school kids, but There is only one 3rd year class, 2 2nd year classes, and there are 10 1 st year classes. So I have to just take the best two students from each class for the contest(as decided by the Principle) Really the language level between the classes is not great. I really think most of the 1st year students are better than the majority of the 2nd and 3rd year kids.

So, you are not at a huge school. That's good.
Is the winner going to rep the school in the regional?
If so, go with the Principal's choice.
However, if you have time to kill, invite all 1st grades who wants to enter to an audition.
This will be a chance for you to find some hidden talents. Not only that, you get to say: "You are CUT!" Wink
