I recently resigned with my previous school for another year long contract.
I followed the exact same procedure for gathering my documents as last year.
My visa was denied because my criminal background check was not statewide (it was from my town which was notirized and stamped at the apostille office).
Also, a notirized letter from my University along with transcripts was not enough, they want my actual diploma.
I can live with that even though they probably have my degree verification on file from last year.
Anyway, my supervisor is not the most knowledgeable guy on these matters and he insists that I mus obtain a state level clearance.
That would be fine with me if New York State level police issued Criminal Background checks, but they don't.
I am not certain as to what I should do as I do not wish to spend any more unnecessary money on fedexing something that won't float.
Can anybody help?

Get an FBI criminal background check. This can be done online.

Thank you Alaskaman.
I couldn't find an online option for the FBI but they do snail mail.
I think that should suffice.
Thanks again.

I think you can get a statewide criminal record search through the NY State Unified Court System (for $55.)
http://www.courts.state.ny.us/apps/chrs/
I had it sent to my New York address, and a relative sent it to an apostille service, which notarized, got it apostilled, and Fedexed it to me in Korea.

Of course, if you're in NY you could save some money by getting it apostilled yourself, but it was definitely worth it for me to pay that company to do it.
