Was just told that I have to do an open class for November 12th, and that my lesson plan is due next Tuesday for it...

Fine, no problem... The school is gearing up for an open house next week involving preformaces from all of the classes but whatever, I'm sure I'll have time to meet with my co-teacher and talk about this...

"Oh, by the way... This class is for district supervisors and new NSETs that were hired in September..."

Ummm... Sure, okay... No problem... Not a huge deal... Though now I'm sure you'll turn around and tell me that I have to use the new English room to do this... You know... The one that we never use for regular classes and that I sit in all day wondering why we bought all of this techno-crap we never use... (Green-screen system with stage and lights, touch screen, wireless mics, etc)...

"Oh, by the way... You have to teach this class with the head of the English department..."

Ummm... What??... The head of our English department went off for 6 months of English training last December after Winter Camp... She came back to teach at our school in September where she was promptly told she had to teach grade 3 home room because a grade 3 teacher got knocked up... So not only have I not taught a class with this woman in almost a year, she hasn't taught English in almost the same amount of time!!...

In other news, despite the government's decree to shut down all school gatherings, my principal has decided to go ahead with the open house next week... Which should definatly increase the 10 confirmed cases of H1N1 in my school and spread it to parents and the general public at large... But hey, at least we get to showcase the school right??...

Sorry to rant... I'm having a TiK kinda day Wink

that sucks, but on the other hand, maybe i'll get to miss some of my classes and watch yours Wink

honestly though, i know it's a pain to do these open classes, but it's also a compliment that they're bringing in the new SMOE teachers to watch yours.

Dealing with the same sort of stuff at my school.

And I thought my room was equipped! But anyway, they told me the same thing... that I had to use every last bit of technology in the class when the bureaucrats were here watching, even if the lesson didn't call for it. I should have known that that's just the nature of the beast when working for the public sector. I did it before in the States. But then again, maybe it'd be the same in hagwon, only then you'd be putting on a show for the parents rather than bureaucrats.

But you're right when you say "Okay, no big deal" even in a tongue-in-cheek way. That's usually what stuff like this turns out to be in my experience.

Happens to the best of us. I can appreciate your need to rant, with all the pissing and moaning I've done about my own SMOE job on this board as of late.

Hmmm... I misunderstood. Other SMOE teachers are watching, probably along with bureaucrats? So far as I know only officials from SMOE are set to watch mine, but that might be another surprise. Speaking of surprises, last week I was told my final class today would be observed, then at the beginning of this week I was told it would be NEXT Wednesday, then this morning the head Korean teacher asks me, "So did you prepare something special for today?" "What?" "Officials from head office will come in sometime today." "For THIRD grade? I was told it would be second, and that it would be next week." "I think it's today!" Increasingly typical of business around here. Luckily no one showed up.

Well, at least they informed you about your open class.
Sometimes SMOE will tell you the day before....

SMOE is NOT reliable when it comes to planning and human resources at all.

BEWARE!

Mega +1... As was seen when we were all re-signed last year and didn't get our contracts till the 3rd week in July (We should have had them in May to start the visa renewal process, lol)...

Xuanzang - Not a model school... Apparently the supervisors who did my renewal open class really liked me or something (Couldn't quite get a straight answer out of my co-teacher when I asked her why we were chosen to do this, lol)

Nomad-ish - Thanks Very Happy... And come on by! I'm gonna try and have some friends convince their schools to come as well so we can play some PS3 on the touch screen afterwards Wink

SW - LOL... Ya, I've had similar classes that were supposed to be watched... Principal came in for 30 seconds, nodded to us, then left... And somehow we got good marks? lol...
