I want a web hosting in Korea, preferably with Red5 installed. I'm aware of internetbrothers.co.kr and I'm considering them, but they don't have red5 installed.
Any ideas or leads?
I know jackdaniels is a tech expert, but his expertise isn't in the area I want.... |

Why do you want hosting in Korea? Any particular reason its got to be here?
The internet is everywhere. I run two websites that hosted in the US but work just fine from here. |

I'm looking to set up video capture (using a Java based RED5 server) and streaming playback. I'm not absolutely certain, but I think geographic location would have an effect on video streaming/capture.
I'm looking into it, but I've been quoted 200,000 a month for a dedicated server here. I don't think anybody in Korea offers Red5 hosting. |

yup. You've got a good reason to go local. Latency issues of your streams going overseas might be a biotch to work with. 200k is spendy, though. Ouch.

200K a month is too spendy, me thinks. I'll check out Japan and Hong Kong, though it doesn't look promising (Japan would be more expensive I reckon).
I'm experimenting with an idea. See hotdogkorea.com |

for just experimenting, 200k is way too much. RED5 being open source means there's lots of community out there to help with ideas. But just an ordinary server that you control - and load red5 onto? IS that expensive as well? I pay 200k for 2 years for mine and I could load red5 if I wanted to. |

Are you on VPS? Red5 requires Java to be installed. |

I gotta ask, man, is there any reason why you wouldn't just put your things on YouTube and link them through your site? I *believe* if you mark them as "private" people can't find them and watch them for free (assuming you were going to charge for the service). Dedicated video hosting can create a TON of headaches and eat up a lot of bandwidth.
(Mind you, it's been a few years since I was actively involved in the tech business, soo...) |

I'm on a vps, but so far I haven't done anything with Java. Java is a client side thing anyway. I can write java and the client deals with it.
Does red5 require a java server? |

I see what you're saying, but I don't think YouTube supports video capture (you can upload a video, sure). There seems to be issues with speed and YouTube streaming in Korea (although I'm not limited to YouTube as the providor). If you look at the features at Riffly.com then you'll know what I want to emulate, the users webcam stream is recorded directly onto the website and then embedded as a comment. I'd like to use Riffly, however I haven't been able to contact them and they haven't updated their twitter feeds in a long time. |

Yes, Red5 is written in Java. I haven't heard of a client side red5 server, but I don't think it would be practical for streaming video recording. Red5 records in real time from the users webcam. The users doesn't have to think about file formats, downloading java client server, waiting to upload their file etc. |

there would be no client side red5 "server." The html code the red5 spools down to the client may have java in it, though. I don't know enough about it. What does the red5 site say about the hosting server requirements? |

Red5 requires Java to run, a minimum version of Java 5 (1.5) is required and Java 6 (1.6) is preferred.
The installation files for the red5 server are 35MB, and I haven't heard of anybody using the method you mentioned. I'm not saying it's technically impossible, I just don't have the knowledge to approach it. |

Internetbrothers have just added a dedicated server page, and are now offering Atom 330 1.6GHz at a price of $99 dollars a month. That might do me, any opinions? |
